They will travel a long ways. I have a pond in the woods behind my house and it's about 140 yards off the road. Across the road from me the neighbors have a pond and it's about 300 yards off the road. Over the 10 years or so I've lived here I have seen multiple snappers going between ponds. Most notably, their back moss/algae will still be wet when I've gotten closer to investigate.

We must have had lazy snappers in my pond growing up....

We had pond front property with a retaining wall on a slightly raise section of land no more than ten feet from the waters edge. Every year there’d be one or two turtle nest, if that’s what you call them. Widely spaced, like about 30-40 feet apart.

Thanks for posting this @spitdog .

We used to have something similar to that on a stream near where I work. It was related to a chemical spill and part of the settlement was that the company had to monitor water quality for 5 years to ensure remediation was effective. There was equipment that would pull a sample periodically then someone would collect and test the sample.

Could also be housing for equipment that monitors water level.

I'd be really tempted to put some kind of surprise inside, for the next person who happens upon it.

Speaking of weird old structures... how about these WWII ammo bunkers, formerly of Camp White, near White City, OR, now smack in the middle of the Denman Wildlife Area, at 42°26'54.2"N 122°52'04.1"Wammo_bunker_2.jpg ammo_bunker_1.jpg

Over 40 years ago on a backpacking trip in the Eastern Sierra's . We came across a rescue litter basket at the bottom of the glacier of Mt Ritter

They were all locked up tight last time I was there. I got into one years ago and it was nothing exciting, but I didn't get any photos, either.

Nice find. If you didn't figure it out already, the brand is Old Quaker.
