Has anyone had to replace a clutch yet?

One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of folks having the early clutch failures are people with larger tires and a lot of added weight that haven’t regeared. Regearing definitely helps prevent additional slippage especially when wheeling.

Or a crawl box, would love to get one of those.

But yeah 1st gear/4lo isn't enough especially when you have larger tires and are rock crawling. Clutch slippage is bound to happen then

Yup. I was stupid and ran 35’s for about 6 months before I regeared. Shortly after my TOB took a shit and I replaced the clutch and flywheel with the URD stage 2 and HD flywheel. It was right about that time I started building the ADM kits.

With the gears and new clutch/flywheel combo, I could put it in 4Lo and walk beside the truck, not quite as slow as a crawl box, but it was fat lady in a parking lot slow.

Done with ADM, smooth as butter. Took her to a parking lot and clunked around in 4Lo for good measure. Dropped the clutch in 2nd at 2500rpm a couple times for good measure (I'm not man enough to drop it in 1st in 4Lo, that's just too mean to her). Checked for leaks constantly before, during, and after, but not a drop. No issues at all.

As for the difference in the clutch feel, it is definitely better for sure. Not insanely day and night overall, but there were little things that are completely gone now. Like the frequent lurch in first gear because the pressure wasn't what my foot was expecting...well now wherever my foots at, that's the pressure. So it no longer feels as much like just 100% on or 100% off. I think I still need to do a pedal adjustment from the clutch replacement though, because the pedal still doesn't start to disengage the clutch until it's pushed in about 2-3 inches. I'm pretty sure the mechanic skipped that part when he replaced my cooked stock clutch with the aftermarket one (never going back there for sure).

Overall really happy to finally get it done and happy with the results. At this point from my experiences, I would say that the ADM should be done on every single MT Tacoma, no matter if you have stock clutch or aftermarket. And I'm getting closer to convinced that the accumulator is definitely related to Tacoma stock clutches dying prematurely. Clutches burn out if they aren't at the right pressure against the flywheel that they should be, and the accumulator causes the clutch to not be at the pressure your foot thinks it's at. It's that simple.

@Trident904 Hopefully you can help some other MT owners that are hesitant to do the mod themselves, by buying your kit instead of doing it from scratch. Because every MT owner should do this mod. I wish you all the best, good luck.

Just check the fitting going into the release cylinder periodically to make sure it’s not leaking. The non sleeved fittings can work themselves out without warning. Mine was fine on my first build for a couple weeks then in a matter of 300-400 feet I lost all clutch pressure. When I got under the truck the fitting was a 1/2 turn loose.

Yup. 1st gear in 4lo is good .... But deff could be lower when in the rocks. Had a LOT of um, skid testing, in Tennessee walking through creekbeds not slow enough

I have a 2016 Sport MT with 70k and my mechanic said the clutch is going out. I took it in because of horrible metallic smell coming from the engine. I thought the radiator was leaking. The mechanic says its the clutch. Taking it to the dealer since it is still under warranty. I expected to get more than 70k before replacing it. Is that un-realistic? Just wondering. (I'm not hard on it and hardly ever tow anything.)

Guarantee its the accumulator messing with you. Get rid of that junk, get a new clutch under warranty, and enjoy.

l dont think the clutch will be covered under warranty, it is a consumable item like brake pads.

Up to 150k on the stock clutch.

Whats everyones preference for a replacement on a DD? I don't offroad, but I do pull heavy trailers (6k+) pretty frequently.

Would like to purchase replacement items ahead of time and have ready for when they're needed.

This is kind of concerning because I’m still under 30k (about 22k) and my bite point is pretty high... it all started after the 5k maintenance when I picked up the truck it was higher and it doesn’t take that much travel to disengage. Anyone else experience the Jurassic change in bite point after bringing it to the dealership

I actually am gonna ask them to check it out because around 4k rpm the clutch pedal rattles.. I am gonna have them check the transmission. The rattling has been going on for a while. But mainly I'm gonna ask them to adjust the cylinder

85,xxx miles on my factory clutch. There is a guy down the road from me who has a 1st gen with over 400k miles and has only been through 2 clutches.

There is a TSB out for a squeaky/loose clutch pedal. It's inconsistent, hence it not being a real. They might check into that as well.

    Also

Accumulator delete. Get on it. Everyone.

Not that anyone is, but I wouldn't write it up to all third gen clutches being suspect.

I wheel my truck almost every other weekend in the mtns of NH and have zero issue with my clutch. 75k

All of my MT Tacomas made it to 165k and over before I had to look at the clutch.

I suspect a lot of premature wearing of the clutch is folks being stubborn / delusional thinking the transmission is going to adjust to them, when they need to adjust their driving style to each individual vehicle. Just my 2c
