Front diff and transfer case breathers are already pretty high up in the engine compartment

I have driven tacomas for over 20 years and I have had all 3 generation trucks. The gen 1 and 2 both had the front actuator replaced because of the vent tube. You guys need to pull on these tubes every so often and make sure they are on because you don't know there is a problem until there is a problem. They will dry rot and fall off or just crack around the nipple and look like they are on but there not and if you get in high water they will leak.

I was out at my deer lease this weekend and hit the 4wd hi knob and no 4wd. The indicator light blinked and it would never engage. I took off the skid plate and looked at the actuator and the vent hose is on and couldn't really see any problem's but I'm betting water is the culprit somehow. I have a 2019 with 38,500 so no warranty work. I will post up on here tomorrow when I find what caused the problem.

My truck was towed to the dealer today. When getting picked up the truck was back to its normal state (2WD) and I was able to engage at 4L and 4H.. and then back to 2WD , it is now at the dealer will keep you all posted!

This type of shit is why I really wish we had manual transfer levers. I don't know why everything has to be electronic.

everyone knows you need to sometimes try more than once, right? Its even right in the manual. my second gen almost never went into 4lo on the first try, and my 3rd gen also never goes into 4lo on the first try. They should, but dont always.

Picked up my 2019 Tacoma yesterday and was told that the 4wd was hung up and the tech manually moved it to 4wd and everything works as it should. Now it did me little good taking with the service rep. I don't like fixes like this because I needed my 4wd and don't like knowing I don't have it when I need it. The service rep said I should move it to 4wd every so often which I replied I do more than you think. So they charged me 125.00 to tell me that basically they don't have a clue why it hung up but its working now.

I got the call , they are replacing my computer (Ecu) and the actuator. It got damaged by the water. Luckily it’s under warranty.

I really doubt it's the ECU's fault, but glad they are fixing.

Make sure to drain and fill the front diff, it's cheap insurance and the actuator undoubtedly failed via water or corrosion. (Actuator is exposed to diff internal)

Any word if the vent hose was breached?

Not always but fairly often the warning lights on my dash for the various 4WD systems usually flash on/off when I try to engage them if I am moving and there is a load on the drivetrain. And I am not talking about while driving fast or the engine/drivetrain heavily loaded. What usually happens is I have to come to a complete stop and reattempt whatever it is I am trying to do (2WD high to 4WD high; 4WD high to 4WD low; turning off ATRAC; engaging rear eLocker, ...). Same thing going the other way. Is it a manual transmission thing? I don’t know. Not a big deal regardless. However, the truck is only a year old and I don’t use 4WD a lot (usually once a month) so perhaps it needs a little more breaking in. Yeah, I prefer manual shifters as well.

I am just guessing based on some anecdotal evidence. (I short circuited that ECU 12 ways to Sunday working on 2 wheel low, and tripped safeguard after safeguard but the ECU came back to life every time. Also there have been some cases where dealers have replaced ECU, but it took actuator to fix the issue. So now very leery to point finger at ECU)
