If I have the key in the back of the bed I can't open the door....the amplifier allows them to walk up to the vehicle, open it, start and drive away even if the fob is far away (probably depends on the amp's strength).

I'd much rather have a regular key but it wasn't possible with the tech & premium packages.
When I get in I usually put the key in a drawer under a was of tinfoil......tinfoil taco-hat but I bet it works!

We have a 4Runner with the push button, one day I had the key in the door pocket with the door open, the runner would not start (no key).
So, what I am understanding is, the amplifier will let them start your vehicle and drive off.

This! Follow this process and you will find that your fob is “off” until you press any button on the fob once again. To test, try opening your locked door (if keyless) and it will not open.

I think most states carry policies are along these lines. Pretty sure that TX is different....I thought I recall a story where a neighbor was shooting at thieves breaking into a neighbors house.

I believe it's really more of a relay attack than an amplifier attack. When you trigger the truck to look for a fob (pulling the door handle pushing the PTS button) it sends a request for authorization. The key fob gets this (assuming it's on) and replys with an 'ok go' code. Truck gets to the ok and performs action.

The attack involves getting a signal relay device next to the truck and the fob. So that when the truck asks, that request is sent much further than Toyota engineers deemed reasonable. The fob responds and the signal is again relayed. The end result is that thieves make your truck believe the keys are present when they are actually hung on the keyhook by your door.

Turning off your fob is the easiest way to 100% thwart this attack. Maybe MESO can create a fob with an off button for all of us to lazy to hold lock and press unlock twice. I desire aftermarket shortcuts.

I live in a condo building and my truck (when I get it) will be parked underground.
Regarding stealing the signal from my fob, would I be correct in assuming that the thieves would have to be close to the truck and key fob to make it work?
I assume my truck would be safe since the fob is so far away from my truck.

Yes. They have to be able to sniff the fob signal and boost it to the truck.

They rely on the fob being close to a door or outside wall.

Again, just tossing your fob in a metal container when at home will be plenty.
