trying to predict something like this is futile given how new and complex it is (eg not enough time to correlate). but if you look at washoe county data, there's a pretty obvious effect on active cases vs SIP (extreme) and mandatory masks (more of a middle ground, looks promising but TBD). all in an attempt to not overwhelm the healthcare system. no one is saying any of this will stop covid (and if they are they are morons). anyway yes it sucks because the only thing for people to do outside their house is recreate, which makes it shittier for all of us.

sorry to hear about your cancer @stickyTaco, that is the shits. :( hope the surgery went well. and yeah, fuck cancer

Absolutely agree. The parameters have changed too much, over a short period, to make accurate projections. We don't even know all the variables, rather, we simply don't know what we don't know.

It's really fucking the elective and outpatient surgeries at Renown. Touching on the difficult and heartbreaking news from @stickyTaco : the unheard majority of collateral damage disassociated from this pandemic has been tertiary medical patients with very little support from the medical community through no fault of their own.

History will be the ultimate judge of our collective actions. We have no concrete way of knowing if shutdowns and restrictions will have saved more than not implementing them.

However, I can say without a doubt, that our society as a whole has been ill prepared for this virus. Hopefully they learn from experience instead of scapegoating their political ideologies.

This is no one's fault, just a super shitty way to find out we are not nearly as collectively clever as our national ego would suggest.

I might start taking this approach. I always like to camp on a lake or river but there’s pretty much no spots like that anymore where you can pull in on a Friday after work and still get a spot to camp. And even if I do there’s fuckwads partying all night and you know how sound carried across a lake.

I’ll probably just start hanging out at a lake or whatever during the day and then find a spot in the woods tucked away from everything to camp for the night.

I’ve had the same thoughts on dropping a tree across the trail or making some little gatekeepers along trails to keep the riff raff out. Not sure how much PG&E would like that though not being able to get back to their lakes :D

I would be wicked disappointed to get past a 'gatekeeper' only to find a nicely groomed and maintained service road.

If the area is still accessible, Jackson Meadows area outside Truckee has almost endless trails and quite a few lakes to explore. That's where my buddy and I always go and we choose some random trail that usually leads to a small lake (if our maps are accurate). So long as you stay away from the main lakes and roads, you may have some luck finding a spot

Additionally, if you take off south of Blue Lakes on Deer Valley Trail, there are a ton of spots up there that are almost always wide-open. The first stream crossing leads down a fairly accessible corridor into a few smaller valleys, and if you keep going you'll get to some granite slabs. Note: if you enter from the south at Hermit Campground (a few miles past the top of Ebbits Pass), there is a gatekeeper obstacle that keeps anyone under 33s out pretty reliably.

Is Deer valley open now? Was up there a couple weeks ago and the gate was still locked which was a little disappointing. Unless I just missed it and they opened July 1st or something.

Edit: Found the status. Opened last week 7/8

By trying to put a group together I mean, I mentioned it to someone I know who's social enough to put a group together.

You guys are giving away all the spots. This is why we are all running into chucklefucks when we are looking for peace and quiet.

The Jackson Meadows area is one of my go tos and I’ve been or camped at most of the lakes back there but unfortunately a lot of the smaller lakes are pretty popular now.

Camped off Deer Valley last fall but didn’t check out any of the side trails. It was nice and the trail is definitely rough enough to keep the van/Subaru crowds out. I’ll have to get back out there again and explore. I camp a ton in the Blue Lakes area.

Nobody has given away anything that’s not already a zoo. Besides someone saying Deer Valley no specific spots have been named just general areas.

I guess the Hermit Campground was pretty precise, but I digress, if someone gets their Outback through that, they deserve to be there.
