I have a 2011 Tacoma with 175,000 miles. I put the recommended oil weight ( synthetic) every time I change that and the oil filter. Here recently I noticed after a long drive, around an hour or more, the engine will knock really bad almost like a diesel engine. Now this only happens after I come to a stop or slow way down, it will knock real bad when I accelerate, usually after a long drive on the interstate. So for instance I come down on an off ramp and stop, when I accelerate it knocks for a few seconds until it gets into a different gear. After this it seems to settle and does not do it again until I get off the highway again.. anyone have any thoughts?

Detonation. Put the highest octane gas you have available and see if it goes away.

I will try and get a recording next time I drive a long distance and will try high octane gas.

I agree. The cylinders are nice and hot after a freeway run. Then you give it gas and the extra fuel and load at low speed makes it detonate and you get the rattle.

I'm not sure of the spark plugs. I bought the truck two years ago and put 35,000 miles on it and a lot of mountain miles. I am now at sea level. I can try new plugs though on top of high octane fuel.

Plugs would be a good start. Maybe run a tank of gas with some Lucas oil then change the plugs. Edit: for fun clean the MAF, as well

As many as I can fabricate
Yeah, sometimes when the wife is yelling at me from the kitchen, it's not a fire. She's just yelling because she hates me. LMAO. You are correct. Everyone in the room needs to here the same sound before we can continue. Knocking can be bad. Rattling can be fixed...sort of like ignorant, and stupid. Lol

Just to clear up a couple of things:

The plugs on the 4.0 V6 should be replaced every 30K Miles and this engine also has no lifters it uses buckets over the valve spring for lash adjustments.

The 2.7 I4 has hydraulic lash adjustment "lifters".
