Sometimes the most simple solutions are the best, if they see that the vehicle has a club they might think its too much trouble and move on to another vehicle instead of trying to cut the club with something or spending too much time trying to remove the steering wheel and possibly getting caught or breaking the front windshield and driving in a way that would cause attention to them on the street.

I know that putting a club on it would be alot less restrictive on a persons lifestyle than having to carry around their key fob in a special pouch while its in their pocket or keeping the key fob in a special box while its in the house, and even if they put it inside of a special box or pouch what happens when you take it out? the person who left the signal extender/copier thingamajig outside of your house to steal the signal can grab the signal when you take your key fob out of the signal blocking thing that you purchased.

They don't leave the extender laying around. Think of it more like a dongle plugged into a laptop / tablet. With the number of individual codes, they have to relay it real time.

Again, the existing fix to all of this is the automakers transitioning to a fob that turns off if it is not moved / jostled for a certain span of time. I have no idea when Toyota will transition, but some other MFGs have already.

Knowing Toyota maybe by 2030 we will have that feature for the key fobs, we didnt get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay until 2020 on the Tacoma's and Tundra's when other automakers had that feature several years before Toyota.

LoL! This is different than that. Basically just an accelerometer and timing chip on the fobs. Toyota may have started already.

Here one article about how easy the relay is to make:
    https://www.wired.com/2017/04/just-pair-11-radio-gadgets-can-steal-car/

There was an article somewhere about the automakers who are transitioning.

The price is not much at all, esp considering the consequences, but an Altoids tin is 1/10th of that and you get some mints to enjoy. :D

It would also be good at work if you are at a small company? That might be kicking the paranoia into overdrive though?

Honestly I think everyone needs to stop being so paranoid about this. There are hundreds of thousands of cars, across all automakers using this same keyless entry technology. Yes, some smart thieves have been able to steal cars by amplifying the RFID signal. The chances are slim that you will get your vehicle stolen by a smart criminal using this method. The majority of thieves just look for easy target cars, those that are left unlocked and early model cars that lack anti-theft devices and are easy to part out. All you can do is cover the basics, park inside a garage if you have one, if not keep your car locked in a well lit area. If someone steals it, that's what insurance is for. Spending your time worrying wearing a tin foil hat and keeping your keys in a Faraday box is a waste. You might as well have just gone with a traditional keyed ignition trim.

Look up the stats? Hundreds of cars are being easily harvested. This is not a small problem.

But yeah, a real key is the easiest deterrent and is what we have on all our stuff at the moment. I hate PTS. This big theft problem is the icing on the cake.

It would be galling to tell the OP's friend that this is NBD, esp when the prevention is pretty easy once you know about it. So yeah, I will yell it from the roof tops.

Where are these stats? Are you talking about hundreds of cars worldwide or within one city for this particular study that you're getting your stats from? The perspective of the pool would determine if it is a small number or not.

3/4 of a million per year out of about 17 million sold each year. Small numbers . . .

More than 90% are stolen with the relay attack. Let's not worry . . .

Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see anywhere in that study that gave any numbers to the amount of vehicles stolen via amplifying the fobs RFID signal (relay attack). Where was the stats of cars stolen via relay attack?

Go kick rocks with that stupid response. You said there were stats, then you gave a link to a page which doesn't say anything about 750,000 out of 17,000,000 cars are stolen every year via relay attacks. If you want to make claims then back them up.

I dont know it would look pretty bad for Toyota if peoples key fobs started to malfunction and they werent able to open/close/start up their vehicles so I assume that it would go into Toyota's rigorous testing procedures which takes several years before they release stuff in their vehicles. Look at how much flak Toyota got recently for the fuel pump issue on their vehicles because they wanted to go with a cheaper parts provider.
