I fill up when i have a quarter left. I think its a good habit to have and its better for the fuel pump imo. I think once i had the yellow light come up. Running out of gas is no fun haha!

Oh, I've run out of gas. Not the Taco and not because I was trying to stretch it.

I call BS on the pump cooling from submersion. In my little mind, it is more about the mount that it is in and the fuel it is pumping. The mount will contain all the fuel that is needed for cooling. That is always going to be there until the tank is completely dry.

I've been operating this way for 30yrs and only had one pump fail. The mech pump on our PoS Celebrity.

You might be right about the cooling of the fuel pump. I was just always told that, and it became a habit. Same like changing my oil every 8-10k miles .

Nothing wrong with that. I just don't like going to the gas station often. About two weeks per tank is such a nice thing.

Seriously? No taste for risk? I used to run out of gas like once a week. It’s been awhile but I’m sure I’m due any day.

I've also always heard it's bad for the pump but I would think it's bad as in you shouldn't do it all the time because it could shorten the life of the pump. Like putting 1,800 lbs in the bed of the Tacoma, sure the truck should be fine if you only do it every once in a while and don't do anything reckless.
But say you run the tank dry once a week and leave the pump running on an empty tank, it might take some life off the pump.

I'm willing to bet someone on YouTube has a video of a fuel pump running on empty to see how long it lasts before failure.

I drive my truck on weekends only, so quite often i fill up once every 3 weeks, good feeling :D

Edit: i meant to say changing my oil ever 8-10k km, not miles:oops:

Haha yea. I like the anxiety of wondering if I’ll run out. It can be exciting. And less life risking than sky diving.

I know. Most people do it per owners manual so every 10k miles. I drive my truck quite hard at times and it makes me feel better changing it earlier. Although, a lot of members on here will say its a complete waste of money and resource. They might be 100% right.

Looking at fuelly for the Taco, it says my average fillup is 18.4gal. I know that I have put over 20gal in on many occasions. Once it was 20.7. Was a little surprised that day. :D

My bike that has a 5.5gal tank, and the average fill up there is 4.1gal. That is an odd one since the 'reserve' light pops on at 4.0gal used. A lot of miles to ride there.

For both, half is more and less than those averages.

Good point on YT. I bet there are folks that have done that.

i stress-tested the miles til empty a while back. basically ticks on when you have about 3ish gallons left. multiply that by what you're current tank average is and that's what you should be able to stretch.

i was averaging 20.1 MPG on a tank and really wanted to hit a 400mi tank. gas light came on at like 340, 0mi to empty at 370 or something but i calculated 60mi to go until true empty. filled up at 418 with 20.8gal and change.

    for science. :anonymous:

That's not too bad. I'm between Pittsburgh and the highlands and frequent the MD/WV mountain counties and if I set the cruise at 75mph I'll get around 15mpg with an empty truck. This truck doesn't like highway driving. If I stay to the two lane 40-55mph roads, even with intersections I average 19-20mpg no problem loaded for a weekend of fun, no trailer of course. Looks like you had solid trip.

Not in CO / Utah it isn't. Most freeways here are 75-80. My trail pig refuses to do >73 unless I make it. I'm a right lane cruiser now. Anything over 75 my mileage goes from bad to terrible, esp since I always find a headwind.

Yep, all day. If you want to tow or haul often, don't buy any midsize truck. If you tow/haul a couple times a year, is it really a strain on the budget to get less MPG for the yearly vacation?

P.S. Not a Ford hater but chew on this too; those high power EcoBoost V6s run like a raped ape, but suck fuel when towing

So what's the deal with the 3 wheelers? I've not seen anyone ride those for 30 years. Is it kind of a retro-cool thing?
