First time I’ve done 6010/7018 in a year or so. Starting Some pre fab in the shop on a 3” sch80 high pressure steam line. I usually don’t roll anything and weld left handed Often to keep sharp on position welds bc that’s what I do a lot of in the field. The first few Caps were a bit rusty on the overhead but i eventually Got a grip:rofl:

I'm trying to weld at the upper limit of my flux welder. Would using. 30 wire be better so I can move slower since it's not putting out as much material or should I jump up to 35?

What are you welding? If you’re welding 1/4” stuff you’re better off using a heavier wire. If you’re welding 3/16 or less you can get by using .030 wire.

The more experienced guys can chime in but you don’t want your wire to burn before it penetrates. But your heat needs to be high enough to get the penetration, high heat and small wire won’t penetrate well.

Again, someone that can explain this better may be more clear or even correct me. But the above is my understanding.

Makes sense. It's 1/4". Made a few passes on some scrap, then cut it in half and from the bead they look great but I don't think it penetrated much at the root. I'll get some 35 and compare.

What welder are you using? Even with a thicker wire you may need to do a couple passes, especially depending on how you’re welding the joint. Care to show a pic of what you’re trying to weld?

Titanium 125. I'll be welding spring perches to an axle housing.

Your welder is plenty for that. Just bevel the edge of the spring perch a little bit and fill in with weld. Do a second pass and you’re good to go.

@EatSleepTacos I ran across your truck on another thread, the bumper with the bar over the lights looks sick! You did a good job on the whole thing.

It almost makes me want to ditch my bumper and build a tube bumper too but I just got done trimming a good bit off my arb, even cut off the bottom wing for more clearance and from the front can see more of the tires.

Not quite stacked dimes, but a pretty good bead for whats possible with Quartz. The residue you see near the weld is quartz "vapor" that is made when you heat the glass, then resolidifies on the glass. It clears up when you heat up the part again, but in this case it will be sandblasted which also removes it.

Thanks man! May as well share a pic here too. My notching is getting a little better but fitment still sucks. That’s why god invented stringer beads and grinders though

I need some receiver hitch (2.5x2.5 1/4 in seamless square tubing) approximately 2 feet in length and some 2.0x2.0 1/4 in square tubing. Anyone order metal online and if so who do you use? Covid and our dumb governor had made it hard to get steel in town right now.

I’ve used metalsupermarkets before. You can order online and have it shipped to you. Just be prepared to pay a premium for it. No joke, that’ll probably be like $80-100 shipped...
