Looking at a 20 tra sport dblcab, longbed. Want to add a 3/2 level. To buy the kit here in Manitoba, it’s $350 and I can do it myself. To have the dealer install, it’s $1400. It’s not covered under warranty if I do it.

Just an opinion, if you can do the install yourself. Pretend you paid the dealer the 1400, then Actually buy a full Old man emu kit, new leafs and all. Nothing will go wrong cause OME still keeps pretty close to factory geometry. 1000’s of people have the kit.

Whatever you buy should have a hardware warranty.

The only thing having the dealer do it does is 'maybe' include labor if warranty is needed. Read paperwork to be sure.

    Most dealer installed stuff is

    a) lower grade ($350? Come on, that's below Walmart)
    b) a way for the cost to be in the financing when folks have no cash (a really poor financial move)
    c) a way to pillage the buyers wallet.

All under the reasoning of 'you'll have a warranty'.

Do it yourself. save the stuff you take out and put it back in if/when you need to use your warranty ?

i would never EVER pay the dealer to do any mod work whatsoever. find a local tech with experience or do it yourself.

Read the fine print, it’s not a official Toyota warranty if the dealer does it, it is only the dealership’s warranty and it is only good with them.

To that point. A well researched kit like the OMEmu suggested installed by a knowledgeable 3rd party is superior to a shitty kit installed by dealer.

I asked myself same question regarding dealer install or DIY.
I want a power tailgate lock and I asked the dealer to install it. I know I’m getting ripped off but I figured if something were to go wrong with it, I can simply take it back to them. I don’t want then to try to deny me warranty work because I installed an aftermarket part.

You do you, but never doubt your skills and ability to do it right when you research the effort of those before you and take your time to right.

Kings front and rear for only $750, but $6500 for UCAs doesn’t even compare to $995 for lug nuts.

You’re absolutely right, it is a lack in my skills but also that I hear all these horror stories about people being denied work because of aftermarket parts. It’s also the reason I picked up a Pro over an OR.

I wanted a slight lift and better suspension but I was afraid If I did the work myself I’d void the warranty.

The point is I’m a fool and a sucker...but a happy one haha

DIY... I don't trust anyone but myself and one friend who owns a shop to work on my vehicles. And that distrust was earned all the way. Especially by the dealership.

DIY will only void warranty related to the items affected by your install. Likelihood of suspension related warranty failures is pretty low -- in my opinion. And, you technically will have $1000 to cover any non-warranty covered issue should it arise.
