I have a 2006 Tacoma and it had been making a “clunk” noise lately. The noise happens when I’m parked, on my slight inclined drive way, from park to drive or park to reverse. The noise also happens when I’m driving down the road and let off the gas and when I get back on the “clunk” noise happens again... I’m sorry if that was hard to understand it’s my first time posting and I’m not the smartest with my truck so I want opinions so I can try and find the problem myself.

Many things, I would get it in for a full inspection.

Rear leaf springs are known to break, even after recall. Rear prop shaft could be worn. Trans or engine mounts could be worn. etc.

a 'clunk' like the transmission is shifting into gear from park to reverse or drive and while driving, once you add gas and it shifts into the proper gear? when was the last transmission drain/fill? any towing?
or some other type of 'clunk'?

It seems like the early models had a Trans Mount issue?
Maybe it wasn’t official an issue, but I know I’ve seen the Trans mount cause this same symptom.
It is usually reported on earlier model trucks?
Maybe it is age, maybe it is mileage.

Anyways, that was good info you gave there.
I’m betting it’s a mount, or possibly Driveshaft related?

They had a recall for the engine mount if I remember, but I've never performed it. But any truck that old could have wear in numerous places.

I checked the mounts and and drive like and nothing had any play. I don’t know I guess I’m just hoping it’s not the transmission lol

    Are you Auto?

Does the sound happen with your foot on the brake pedal, Stopped, and you switch between P/D/R gears?

Not while it on the brake, id say about half the time moving between park and drive and when I let off going about 40 then get back on

Almost sounds like a combination of axle wrap and a bad bushing or mount.

Old thread, I know, but worth a try. I experience the same/similar issue. A clunk sound when letting off the gas and sometimes again when I apply gas again. Normally when driving around 30-50mph. It is intermittent but a very noticeable loud clunk and you can really feel it in the truck, like I tapped the breaks.

Did you ever find/solve the issue?
