Lucky for you there's a local guy that always get tagged when a recovery is needed. lol

Glad you liked the local trails. Silver is one of my 1/2 day need to get out of the house trails.

Haha yeah I don't mess around too much in the snow, that's the real deal!

Of course I liked it! The views were worth it in themselves. I was wondering if they closed the trail down during the winter. That trail in snow would be intense!

They do close it in the winter. There's a lower and upper gate. Actually there's a lower lower gate but that hardly ever gets closed. The lower gate is just before the first switchback. The upper gate is about 100 yds in front of my rig in that photo. I've never seen them lock the upper gate. As soon as it's not passable they just close the gate before the switchbacks.

The problem with Silver in the snow is 1/2 the switchbacks are NW facing and half are SW facing. In a good winter they both get consolidated and stay firm. In a bad winter the NW one's are easily passable dual locked. The SW ones melt out then freeze. That creates a layer of ice under the snow. It can be really bad news in all but perfect conditions. You have to know the trail really well when it's less then ideal. Even dual locked you spend 1/2 your time sliding backwards. If you know the trail you know where the berms are that you need to hit to stop. If you miss it could be real bad.

Last year I had 2 true "Oh shit" moments. One was on Fordyce. The other was on Silver. lol

Anyone ever go down Fred Canyon Road (off Kitchen Creek road/Cibbets Creek Campground)? My wife and I were looking for somewhere near SD to camp without a lot of folks and weren’t sure how far out it went.

Saw a few jeeps & another taco out there, but turned around after a mile or so.

Kept meaning to check it out over winter, might try this summer if we get some cooler weather (like we've had today). Weekends have been hot though. From what I've heard Lytle Creek is a 2wd friendly trail unless there's snow

I think @DarthPow ran Lytle Creek this past winter

Cold water Canyon is fun. Not too difficult in summer with some nice camp spots. I’m down to roll!

we didn't do Lytle Creek, though we went up Bailey Canyon, I think, 2n49, across the freeway, and it was impassable passed a certain point.

Someone else did, though I don't remember who it was...

he might have done it another day, but I believe he was with me on that run up 2n49. Or maybe he was the one suggesting we go up Lytle Creek, but ended up going up 2n49? I dont know anymore... lol

Just looked at this more closely, this actually looks like a cool area to explore for some low key wheeling and camping. I wonder if it gets really crowded though, I assume the camp grounds are all first come first serve?

There's a ton of really great wheeling and even better camping spots up towards Yellow Post site 19 in Lytle Creek. The creek itself still has fairly high volume flowing through it, which provides a nice ambient sound at night when you're camping. Beware of the mosquitoes, flies, and ants around there. They're super gnarly.

Yup, all first come first serve yellow post. I’ve been twice and haven’t seen another vehicle on the trails besides a few campsites being occupied. Both times were early weekend mornings.
