That article is actually fake news, the person credited with writing it didn’t actually write it.

Real story is dude was black out drunk downtown San Diego and she drove him back to his boat so cops didn’t arrest him. When she got to the boat he wouldn’t even wake up when the pier guards rubbed their knuckles on his chest. The ambulance that picked him up was the one that actually noticed he was underage.

Everyone knows the rules, grab his phone and call his battle, shipmate, whatever and find someone to look after him, sort him out until he can walk past the duty desk on his own. This is basically what we’ve been doing for each other since the Army began.

Ships have tighter security than Army barracks. She didn’t belong to the BHR so she couldn’t drag him on.

That’s why you sort out who his mates are and let them sort it. I’ve paid a hundred bucks to a 98W to hook a mate up to saline so I could get him back on his feet. That’s the point, don’t let your mates get thrown under the bus.

I can remember (sort of) my early days in the Corps when you could be stumbling back to the barracks, skunk drunk, tripping over everything in sight and the MP's would load you up, drive you to your barracks and pour you in the rack.

I agree with your sentiment but she did the best she could in the circumstances of finding a random Sailor drunk. She was able to figure where he belonged and got him close. A ship in port on an off day has a small number of personnel on board as we just found out the hard way.

His friends had already abandoned him in a bar miles from base, they obviously didn’t give a fuck about him.

The only army bases I’ve ever been to have been in the middle of nowhere so it’s easier to find a battle buddy to rescue a dummy. The BHR parks in San Diego where a sailor out in downtown might be stationed at the surface base to the south, the air base across the bridge, the sub base to the west, the hospital to the east, Miramar slightly north or Pendleton way the fuck north.

If I was the one that found him, I’d have dropped him at Balboa and let the docs figure it out.

Meh, getting on a ship isnt that hard if you belong there. I got on absolutely shitfaced one time, they asked why I was so fucked up though. I told them I was a last minute swap for a guy that was having a baby. We were just doing some training though so its not like I was part of the ships company.

I know the Marine Corp takes the whole underage drinking thing serious. Pretty much an automatic NJP at Miramar. Luckily I was 21 before I left the school house.

I remember having a layover at Millington on a Sunday and asking where we -passengers - could get a burger and a beer. Guy said mess hall for chow and golf course for beer. We went to the hole he specified with our bag nasties and there was a small pavilion with a pop machine filled with cans of beer for .50¢ each. A couple of chiefs were already sitting there eating their lunch and having a beer as well. As we were cleaning up a pile of sailors strolled up and started to clean the machine out and I’d bet it all that only one of them could have been 21, minors the lot of them. Chiefs never even batted an eye, things aren’t like they were in the ‘90s anymore.

In and out. Been hanging out on the fringes and avoiding the silence by just staying busy with house projects or other stuff. Too much time to think while on here or sitting around for too long. Appreciate the looking out though.
