I can remember some old air cooled VWs with Autostick, you had to shift gears but there was no clutch.

That came up one thedrive.com recently. It seems that Hyundai has a clutchless manual in the works.

Saab had one in the late 90s (I think?) called the Sensonic.

IMHVO, the clutch pedal is just as important as the shifter.

i'd call an auto clutch manual an automatic. even the term automated manual is misleading.

In my mind, that depends? This Hyundai one is supposed to be a manual gearbox with an automatically operated clutch. Similar to the BMW SMG.

That seems like a lot of work to program and get right. Sort of like the challenge and clusterfucks of double clutch transmissions.

    Here's the article:

i haven't read about the Hyundai but from a driver's POV that's the same as a DSG, PDK, or whatever flappy paddle box. you can use the control stick or the paddles in those, so the experience is similar. maybe the difference is simply that the DSG/PDK are sequential so can only take a push or pull on the stick, and maybe the Hyundai isn't stuck with sequential? does it use a typical shift pattern and go non-sequential?

but for me, either way, w/o a clutch i'm not feeling anything manual about it. after living in a DSG for 8 years and using it as manual as it would allow, i was not driving a manual in any way for those 8 years. and believe me that showed when i got the Taco on 04B12 with an accumulator!

Agreed there. There is only one kind of MT. All the rest are automagic with different sauce. But, there were a few that used a real MT gearbox with an automatic clutch. All had big drawbacks.

I edited by previous post to add the article link.

I hear you and wish I was smart enough to have one back in the day. I would have gotten into a better kind of trouble.

That kinda sounds similar to the old VW Autostick, I think the way it worked was when you pushed down on the shifter to change gears it actuated a clutch.

There was a recent episode of wheeler dealers where they converted a fairly modern BMW automatic to manual. The car itself was pretty awesome because it was basically just a Manual with a few solenoids on it to make it operate as an automatic. They pulled the solenoids, added a clutch pedal, added a shifter, and had the ECM reprogrammed and were good to go.

Without the clutch its just like any other tiptronic/paddle shifter. Has no soul, up down, up down, gets boring in 5 mins. The clutch really adds that soul and that full engagement with the vehicle. I feel as one with my taco when i drive it . Thats my best explanation, haha.
