Installing trailer brakes on my 09 5 lug

    I recently purchased a 6.5x10 trailer to haul my new heavy ass zero turn. I don’t haul daily or anything like that but I would feel a hell of a lot better if I had trailer brakes. Trailer is 5 lug 3500 pound axle. I have no idea where to even start. Someone please point me in the right direction. How is a controller wired? I had a 2012 Cummins and it all came factory so this is new to me. Is there a plug and play kit of some kind?? Thanks guys.

    If you go to etrailer.com they have tons of how to info on trailers, brakes, and controllers.

    If your axle already has the 4 bolt square flange on it you may be able to fit brakes, if not you will need to add the flange or get a new axle with brakes on it already.

    Oh didn’t realize that. I thought all I had to do was swap the hubs. Mhmm. I’ll check tmo

    You could, but you'll need to weld your own tube between them to make your own axle. These won't fit your existing axle.

    You can just get the flange and weld it on yourself though:

    But once you buy the electric brake kits, drums, and do all the legwork/welding, it would be cheaper and quicker to get another axle with brakes already.

    Where can I purchase a already set up axle? I just bought the trailer. Never thought about brakes but my dad suggested it, so probably a good idea.

    Read on down the page and it shows you how to measure to see what size you need.

    Dexter axles are some of the best, but there are others out there that are more affordable.

    Once you get the measurements and lug pattern you need, you can google "trailer axle with brakes" and find a better price most likely.

    I'd call up the place you bought the trailer from and ask them if they can sell/install a brake axle for you. They might even take some $ off if you give them your brand new axle.

    Okay so I do have the plates on my axle. So I guess I just need a brake kit for the trailer and a controller for the truck and all the wiring?

    That should do it, best of luck! Let me know how the controller install goes, I haven't done one on my Tacoma yet but plan to some day.

    Last truck I had experience with was a Cummins Dodge too, that factory wired controller is nice.
