I have 5.29 and 33's with the relevant 2.0 OVtune file. The only issue at 80 is the mpg

what would you say is the sweet spot as far as mph? I’m also on 33’s when these wear out I’m moving up in size.

Ive broken in probably 10 sets of gears and none ever looked like that. That oil could have be reused it was so clean haha.

You'd have to have a driveshaft out of balance for that to happen.

Im planning to get 4.88 or 5.29 gears for my 2017 MT 4x4 off road tacoma.
I have 28575R16s KO2s planning to move up to 295s or possibly 315s. I have a steel rear bumper, rock sliders and roof rack and skid plates in the near future. If i put 5.29s will i be shifting gears like crazy with my Manual transmission?

What do you mean makes the truck feel slower? Do you mean the acceleration or highway speed?

I can see where you’re coming from. Now that you mention it, it does feel a little more boring now that I don’t have to be accelerating to stay in a gear, it’s does feel a little “slower.” But it’s definitely not.

Mobilegear installers is where im most likely going to be doing my re-gearing since its very close to where i live.
However im debating between 4.88 or 5.29 gears

I have a 2017 TRD Offroad 4x4 manual transmission and from the sounds of it from this thread i should go with the 4.88 gears for the Manual.

As of right now my truck has all of this:
    -Steel rear bumper
    -demello DOM rock sliders
    -prinsu rack
    -28575R16 KO2s.

If i add full on skid plates to all of this would 4.88s still be enough? I will most likely also be getting a bed shell later on and strongly leaning for 35s(31575R16) after these KO2s are done.

How much does an OVTune cost?

    Looking at doing gears.
I have a 2016 TRDOR with premium and tech package, sliders, aluminum front bumper, soon to b installed fox 2.5 with remote resi’s and dsc for front and rear but sticking with 265/75/16 tires on stock OR wheels.
Question is since it’s my daily driver and no further mods or weight being added with mostly city and freeway driving with occasional off-road trips in the deserts and mountains would I b better off with 488’s..? Or does everyone still recommend the 529’s.
Looking for the sweet spot on efficiency in shifting, fuel mileage and performance.

Here is a pseudo program for testing to see which gear ratio you need :)

    1. Do you have a stock or modified third Gen?, Input answer$
    2. If answer$ = “y”, then GoTo #SmartMove.
    3. Do you like SlugPerformace that will only get worse? Input answer$
    4. If answer$ = “N”, then GoTo #SmartMove.
    5. !Realize; I over analyze things and still have no clue about this and want to be stuck with the early 4.88 adopters and hardly ever use top gear and live with constant shifting.
    6. Perform 4.88Upgrade-Long-Term-Mistake.
    7. !Realize; Be ashamed.
    8. End Program; Exit.

    9. #SmartMove.
    10. Perform 5.29 Upgrade.
    11. !Realize; Enjoy being a winner.
    12 End Program; Exit.

    Hmmmm so your saying 529’s...?
    lol.
I’ve re-geared my full size 76 blazer with 400 hp to 456’s with lockers and 35’s and that worked out well but limited my top end on the freeway, so that experience has driven me to ask if anyone with a near stock size tire and relatively no extra weight would still recommend the 529’s with a little insight on why just not joining the winners or a b a loser... lol
But your post was entertaining especially the the part about over analyzing things which is true but then when your trying to make an informed decision a little analyzing is required..!!
    Thank you for your response.
Curious what your setup is and if it’s close to mine and what’s your experience with it so far..?

I have a 2018 TDOR. I've added sliders, front bumper with winch, 3" lift with 33" tires and I have a front skid plate installed, so a little heavier than your setup. I had 5.29's installed earlier this year and I have to tell you that it is a night and day difference. It's more responsive in the city and on the highway it's actually a pleasure to drive. I regularly make a 350 mile trek though Kansas and before the re-gear, the truck would be screaming in 4th gear most of the time just to stay at a constant speed. Now it stays in 5th and 6th. I went through the same dilemma you did when trying to decide between 4.88 and 5.29 and MAYBE if you didn't do a single thing more to your truck 4.88's might be the way to go but if you change your mind in the future and add ANYTHING else you will be wishing you did the 5.29's.

Well it seems more people with experience with gears recommending 529
Looks like that will b my choice.

Running 35s and Hutchinson wheels i can tell you 4.88s ain't a game changer on the highway, most probably 5.29 would perform better. Still I was able to start shifting in to 6th gear after not being able to for a long time:rofl:.

5.29 are softer compared to 4.88s i.e. the reason I opted for 4.88s For off road. Not saying you can't off road with 5.29s and not saying you can't break your gears with 4.88s either they are just stronger.

Before I bought them after receiving multiple inputs on getting 4.88 instead of 5.29 I asked ECGS for their opinion explaining what I want to do with the truck their recommendation was 4.88s. So it comes down to what you want based on your setup and what you have going on.
