There's a glut of those already...the Colorado, Ranger, Tacoma, T4R, Frontier, etc... There's only one (well, two if you count the Gladiator) that has a factory solid front axle anymore. It'd be nice to have some options, especially with something aimed specifically at the off-road market in direct competition with the Jeep. But if it's a hit, then awesome. Maybe it'll wake someone up and we'll get another solid axle offering...hopefully from Toyota.

Frankly, it's beyond me how other manufacturers can look at how many Jeeps are being sold vs other 4WDs and not make the solid axle connection.

Just out of curiosity, why would it be ok for an off-roader to have a turbo if it were diesel vs gasoline?

If a fuel size truck can get 25+ mpg what do you think a mid size suv could get. You start adding 3.0 diesels and coyote motors, you’ll be right there in Jeep pricing category.

How long and how many people have been asking for a bare bones off roader for a reasonable price and when it arrives, they want to change everything? I don’t care if Honda had come out with one, I wanted a utilitarian, not overpriced piece of shit. Jeep is not capable of doing that.

True dat. I don't wanna be, but I'm being forced to because I don't have a solid front axle. :pout:

Of those vehicles you listed maybe the T4R and Tacoma are lifestyle type vehicles. How many Jeeps do you see that are decked out but you know will NEVER see off road. I think the Bronco can jump into the same category. Will we see Broncos with obnoxious lifts, skinny wide tires, and every accessory known to man bolted on-sure as taxes we will lol.
I’m good with it though, it’s other people’s money, spend it how they want to.

The Power Wagon is the only other solid axel off road vehicle I know of. You’re definitely right with the lack of choices.

Diesels are dogs without forced induction, but they make a shit load of torque and get better fuel economy with or without forced induction. I'd be happier if it was a positive displacement supercharger, but nobody seems to want to go that route with a diesel.

I think throttle response is an important factor when putting your vehicle in unstable positions, so the turbo lag could be a detriment. I agree the turbo diesel would have the same issue, but the amount of torque it produces is a compelling enough reason for me to overlook the lag.

Haha, you can't make everyone happy I guess. It's all good. I'm just bitter about how limited I am with IFS and unable to cough up the cash to do anything about it (and have thus developed an irrational hatred of all things IFS). I'm all for a utilitarian off-roader. Base model with the specifically off-road goodies (front and rear lockers, rock sliders, winch-ready steel bumpers, etc...) would fit that bill. It's just that you aren't likely to be able to find one with that combination. The off-road stuff is going to wind up on the "plush" trim models which I think is what irks you as much as me.

Still, I have to remember that you are working on your serious off-road rig, so maybe all the off-road gear isn't a huge deal to you.

Trust me, turbo lag is a non factor. Even if it were, the motor makes torque before the turbo spool. It’s not like it just sits there until you build boost. The 2.7 10 speed combo is going to be ridiculous. Don’t be surprised when people are competing to be the first to put one in the 10’s 1/4 mile and they’re all over 1320 video.

The off road gear isn’t as important to me because I just want a daily driver that’s also competent off roader that doesn’t cost $40-50k.

I have a Question For anyone who has rebuilt multiple shocks. Is it normal for a little oil to seep out of the bottom On the outside edges of the bearing housing (the part you change all the seals in), just under the retainer C clip once you get everything put back together AND you push the shock stem down like it is cycling BEFORE you ever fill it with nitrogen?

Just wondering cause this is my first rebuild on my Icons and these are the 2.5 non resi fronts. I rebuilt them yesterday and figured once I filled them with nitrogen then it would put pressure on the bearing housing to push back up against the C clip retaining ring and the O ring around the bearing housing (or whatever it’s called) and it would seal off tight at that point.

just wondering before I waste my time going somewhere to get it filled as if it is not supposed to seep a little at all then I need to figure out something else. I reseated it several times yesterday and it always seeps.

    Any comments?

Again there is no pressure in this yet.
Here is a picture, dust end cap not on just looking down, very very little oil will seep if I try to cycle with no nitrogen in it.

    thanks everyone

Copy that. I haven't really looked so I don't know how much of a hit it would be for the Sasquatch package on a base model...if you could even find one. Considering the base model is in the mid $20ks, I don't think it would double the price, but I could be wrong. Of course, I think I may have a different standard of a "competent off-roader" than you. :D I consider the OGT as it sits barely competent and even then it's not competent enough to take it out of the state to the serious off-road parks.

Ironically, I probably have enough cash invested in the OGT that I could have bought a base model Bronco outright, and it would probably take half again or twice that much to put it on the same level as Todd, Tim, or yours (once you and Tim complete your projects). I honestly did expect more durability out of the OGT when I bought it. If I had it to do over again, I don't think I would. I think I would have looked for a 3rd Gen T4R with an Elocker or a TJ.

Tacoma’s are the Honda’s of the atv world. Yea, they’re reliable as anything, but it’s hard to break shit when the motors are so gutless and hard to stop cause they both still have drum brakes in the rear

I challenge all the diehard Toyota people to venture out of their comfort zone to see what else is out there. They’ll be surprised at how much better some vehicles are than theirs

Anyone know of any place that has nitrogen and can recharge some Icons in Jacksonville or within driving distance?

I have call bike shops, motorcycle shops, power sports shops etc and the only place that I have found with nitrogen says they won't do them cause they only will do dirt bike shocks and I couldn't convince them.
