The trick is to do it during/after a rain storm.

    I resemble that remark

Nice mowers; don't feed them any ethanol!

Mowed our yard many a times as a kid with one of those, dad spent a lot of time working on keeping it running and my brother and I spent a lot of time making sure it rolled when it ran

Nice!! And yeah, I learned my lesson with the first Lawnboy. The mower of my dreams, or at least my youth. A very good condition Mag 19. Didn’t know that there was such a thing as air cooled two stroke oil. I was using the same Motorex premix I put in my dirt bike. Stupid me. In the process of rebuilding it right now. At least it’s been easy to find parts between eBay and Kijiji.

Finally going to fix the power steering leak(s). Might build all new hoses for it so I don’t have to deal with it ever again. All but one are original 1964.

Huge pain in the ass to get this far. Might end up splitting the tractor for rear main seal since I’m this far into it...

Don’t get me wrong, it is very neat and does an awesome job. It would get old to me being in it for hours on end every day. Bad knees and a bad back over here

Yeah, it’s pretty synonymous across the Massey owner’s groups that the dash design on these 35’s is terrible. Even something simple like replacing a gauge is a nightmare. I’m going to plasma cut openings in the back, and on that plate as well. It’s WAY overbuilt for what it needs to do.

This machine is a worker, not a parade queen. Does me no good if it’s a pain to fix.

Do you have to remove the loader sub frame or would you be able to split it with it still attached to the front?

Replacing gauges is indeed a pain, you need hands that fold any which way and wrenches that can too to fit in that awkward tight almost inaccessible space. I still have a non functioning fuel gauge hanging from an s-hook dangling from the gauge hole that I didn’t bother reinstalling because it’s such a pain, but I haven’t gotten around to getting a new one, and I think I need the old one at least wired in place to keep the circuit complete. Maybe I’m wrong.

Plan is to unbolt it from the rear axle and support it with 6x6 cribbing or jack stands. I’ll leave the rest of it in place and roll the rear of the machine away from the front.

Absolutely. I don’t know about the circuit/fuel gauge, mine is smashed and doesn’t work, my wiring is a mess, not original and I plan to clean it up a lot while it’s all apart.

Good news! I had Jury Duty yesterday and today (and every Wednesday until September) so when I get off it’s too late to go to work but still earlier than I’d get home. Put some time into it yesterday and today, found my power steering leak!

The top fitting that goes from the steering box (recirculating ball valve style) to this T was leaking. About a drip every second. I used to have to refill my power steering reservoir once an hour because I’d lose all steering. This is the industrial version of the MF35 so it has real power steering with cylinders on the axle.
    68C15721-FD79-4CB9-8DDF-046DB7A24413.jpg
So that top fitting had backed out at some point, then seized in place! To get it off, I had to take the tubing off the column, spin the whole thing (slightly bent it to clear) then bring into the basement and heat the crap out of it, Kroil, more heat, eventually got it to move a little. Kept spraying and working it and got it 100% free.

I pushed the fitting up the pipe, put some anti-seize between the tubing and fitting, put it all back together and tightened it. Started the tractor and let it run for a half hour. NOT. A. DRIP!!

Topped off the reservoir, tried again for another half hour. NOT. A. DRIP. Cleaned off the hoses from 1964, they’re actually in decent shape. Was planning to replace them but I’m going to modify the bracket that covers them so I can replace if needed without taking the entire dash back apart. They’re pricy, and even making my own custom lines are still expensive.

I’m very happy. Also- since I’ve got it this far apart, I’m just going to split it. I’ve got the mini skid steer to use if needed. Pulled out a small tree I cut down a few weeks ago, too, with the little skid.

    F848182C-E7D0-40E5-8DA3-4D747212EE0B.jpg

Edit- forgot to add, I also adjusted the backlash on the MF35’s steering box. I used to have 6” of play in the steering wheel before the tires would start to turn! Now it’s like a 1/2”. So far, things are going well.
