Crawl control not working

Mine just wouldn’t do it. Climb a curb with front tires at the beginning. 2020 TRD made 12/2019.

 

So interesting news.. I tried mine again in 2 different scenarios. One of which was 1 tire against the curb, the other tire in my driveway. Activated crawl control and it rev'd up enough to get itself over the curb. Mind you this was at a very slight downhill angle against the curb. CC setting 1.

The second scenario was a slight uphill asphalt parking lot with a rather large speedbump to get over. I was almost certain it would stop it. However, it got to the speedbump and rev'd to get over it without issue. This was in CC setting 2.

I tested again with both tires on the curb... same issue as before. This is making me truly wonder if they tuned CC to be less agressive for obstacles and more for getting out of slushy terrain.

 

You guys should go to the mall , there is all kinds speed bumps and curbs .

 

Thanks for the tip! We wouldn't know since we all went with the Offroad package instead of the Sport. Glad you are sharing your experiences with us!

 

Makes me wonder about my earlier thoughts... that there needs to be some sort of 'slippage' or differential traction for the system to work with.

 

You just want some company while you’re hanging out there?

 

Us sports guys go all the time , no curb to high .

Well, I called today for an update to my case and the customer service representative says that my case was updated and the truck is operating normally. For those of you that have not complained or filed a case, I strongly recommend that you do. At this point I have put in a request to have my truck purchased back or replaced. Toyota is reviewing the case and I will have a decision in 45 days.

At some point I guess I can post some dash cam videos! Oops, forgot I had those!

Thanks for the update! If this is truly "normal", Toyota needs to come out with a statement letting people know that the manual is inaccurate and you must use the gas pedal to get over obstacles or go uphill. According to the manual, using either brake or gas pedals will deactivate the system... That is not the case with our 2020's. That would make it more of a "Crawl Assist" system rather than "Crawl Control". False advertisement if they made this change without updating their customer-base.

 

I feel the same way but Toyota does not. Honestly, I think they have an issue and most people that do not have or know how it is supposed to work will ever complain. For me, I use it and paying this much for a truck that doesn’t operate is the same as buying a nice tv and the volume doesn’t work. Would you teach yourself to read lips and keep the tv? Would you just use closed captioning? Yea, it works and you can work around it, but why? Thanks again to everyone and if anyone else ya any luck, please let us know.

Then what the hell is the point of this 'new' CC???? The original concept was that if you got in a rough spot that the truck could try to manage its way out of it on its own. If you now have to help it via the gas pedal then whats the point of the costly option?

Mine works perfectly, doesn’t stop until I hit the brakes... definitely passes the curb test too. 2018 DC OR built in Baja 3/18

 

The issue did not start until early 2020, so some 2020’s work but others don’t starting around a January 2020 build date.

You may be on to something... CC is active in 4LO... There is no reason why you should be in 4LO on asphalt trying to climb an obstacle (6-8" curb)...... I have a 17... but, never ever have I used CC unless I was in legit in need of 4LO... meaning, there is certainly some slippage for the system to recognize and work with... Maybe if it detects no slip on any of the wheels, why would it need to work? Right?

I'm thinking Toyota quietly detuned or added this safety measure to the 20+ models...

 

Possibly, but the issue which kicked this whole conversation off was a report of CC not working on even moderate off-road obstacles, hills, etc. and which has also been substantiated by others. The whole curb/4x4 lumber/etc. stuff started more as a way to have some kind of standardized 'obstacle' where people could compare like for like.

Nobody really cares whether their truck can mount a curb, specifically, but rather we care about whether or not the system functionality has changed or if the system is not functioning as expected and would therefore not be something which could be relied upon for real use.

 

of course... and it doesn't seem like dealerships are much help on the subject either... so bizarre, this issue

 

It goes back further, mine is a September 2019 Texas build and can't climb 4x4's.

It works, it's just been seemingly detuned. In all appearance either a throttle limit was added, or significantly lowered from prior years. Likely intentional, at a minimum they should acknowledge the change.

 

Cc is about as useful as a non working hood scoop .
