ive had a bad seal on my steering rack for a while now. I discovered it was bad on the way back from a 3000 mile trip from Miami FL to corpus christi TX and back. Ive been having to add fluid when i get the typical winding sound. My question is, I want to take a trip to Jacksonville which is about 6 hours. Both seal are bad and leaking but i would just add fluid when needed. Do you think i will be ok? whats the worse that could happen? (i mean that literally). I plan on getting a new rack when i return.

Just be sure to carry extra juice with you. I feel your pain on this one. I had one seal leaking a few months ago. It didn't get as bad as yours sounds. The stealership said they couldn't rebuild them, only replace with new one for 1700 installed BUT they couldn't find one available in America so they felt me on my initial question, " why can't it be rebuilt?" At that point and said they would be sending it out to be rebuilt now since they couldn't find one. Paid 1100 instead which was still major ripoff IMO. I'm pretty sure you could find a place to rebuild vs. replace and cheaper by not going thru stealership. The reason I did was because the truck was already gonna be there to have timing cover resealed for the 2nd time, it'd save me hassle and time which = money & they gave 1 yr unlimited mileage warranty on the rebuild. The timing cover didn't play into pricing because drivetrain warranty covered that...again.

edit - Oh, yours is 01 mine is 05...maybe yours will be cheaper? hopefully so, good luck........

Are rack seals a common problem for tacoma's? or is this the result if exceptional use...like rock crawling or lifts?

I'm getting mine replaced today at an independent shop, a bit expensive ($657.65 parts and $328.20 labor). I found remanned ones online for about $300 and new for about $400 and a bushing kit for about $50 Parts Geek but the shop is giving me 3yr/36k warranty on parts and labor so I paid the extra $$ for some peace of mind. Good luck.

As far as I'm concerned, every seal on this truck sucks compared to my old truck. My rear main was replaced at 51k, both rr axle at 63k, front timing cover at 77k and steering rack seals at 77k. I got the truck with 48k on it, It didn't seem thrashed out or abused. I'm 2wd so lift didn't do it. No offroad action did it. I don't dog it out. I'm just going with they suck.
