Driver's side window rolls down, but not up

Well, so far it will still go up, but it takes a long time. The driver's side window rolls down perfectly and fast. Back up, though . . . it'll go up about 1/4 of an inch then it stops. If I release the switch and wait 30 seconds or so it'll go up another 1/4 of an inch. Rinse and repeat.

I suspect I'm looking at a failing switch, but wanted to see what the collective wisdom thought before I started replacing parts.

Before just replacing it, I'd open up the switch to and clean up the contact points. Likely carboned up and thus current has a hard time going through the switch due to this.

 

What he said. Driver’s side up is often the most engaged contact on the master assembly.

I had the same symptoms. It was just dirty contacts.

Take the master switch assembly out and clean it with electric contact cleaner. The two large fins, pictured on either side of those plungers, are the contacts for the driver’s side FYI

 

My money is on the motor. I had the same problem with the passenger side. It did the same from passenger switch and driver switch. I replaced the motor and has been working fine every since

 

If nothing fell apart inside the door

I say clean the switch first it is right there.

remove the panel disconnect the motor electric using long enough leads route them to the bottom of the doorand up to the inside so the window regulator does not catch them apply 12vdc one way is up the other is down

I have leads with a push button switch I test so many window motors .

If the motor is still slow time for new If the motor works like it should .

Breaking wires in the harness from the eleventeen times the door open and closes

 

Is that picture from the switch in your door handle? I just took mine out and cleaned it up, but it doesn't look anything like that.

The initial test was successful, but then again failure wasn't 100%. I'll give it a few days before I declare victory.

Since it sounds like you mess with window repairs pretty often. I have a hack to recommend. If you have a cheap (or old/extra) battery impact you can: remove the chuck; open the case and tap into the leads for the motor and route the wires out the nose; attach some test leads, or clips. Since the drill have forward/reverse polarity, you can use it to test up/down function.

Its convenient because of the power supply and reverse functions.

 

Does it help if you pull on the window as it is trying to go up?

There's a lot to be said for just cleaning and lubing the track system. Take the door card off and throw some WD40 (or better yet) some teflon lube on the sliders and pivots of the track system. That's free.

If that doesn't work, then your motor could be tired, or, as others said, the switch might be bad/dirty.

 

Came here for this, when I got my truck it functioned intermittently and I immediately cleaned the contacts on the switches, but once I cleaned and lubed the track and pivots it was finally back to 100%

 

While I thank you for the tip it might help others I have a 12vdc 30 amp power supply on a cart like a drill a simple polarity switch does the job of changing directions

I was doing this when Cordless anything was just getting started

 

Well, not fixed. When I get some time I'll follow the diagnostics in this thread. I'll let you know what I find.

If we make some assumptions, I know I know, but if we assume the cleaned contacts in the switch are for sure allowing full voltage to reach the motor, and the motor is struggling to move the window even with full voltage getting to it, I'd suspect the motor itself is starting to get weak.
Have you noticed if different ambient temp affects the windows function?

 

The only ambient temp we've had here for weeks is hotter than hell. I suspect not the motor, though. Sometimes it'll move a whole 3 inches or so pretty briskly before it stops. Grabbing the top of the window and helping it up doesn't help.

Oh wait, is there a relay for these power window circuits? I can see a relay acting up the way you're describing.

 

Tap the motor while pressing the switch. It sometimes works to get the window up in a pinch.

 

Nothing is apart on the window regulator or the track ??

A simple twist in the track from a loose bolt or something broke can cause a issue like this as well as a really dry track filled with years of grit.

Really need the voltage at the window motor reduced voltage will reduce output .

Now my 2000 EWD shows the main power window relay behind the left kick panel yours could be there or it could have been moved.

A coil dropping out would make the window quit but it would be both of them if the right window works most likely not the relay

The coil of the window relay does ground through the right door switch.Via my EWD

Any of the parts having been exposed to water can get cranky and work now and then.

I got some time to work on it today. When I apply power to the leads directly by the motor I get the same behavior. I think the switch is off the hook. I guess I'm going to take that motor out of there . ..

 

where did you purchase the replacment motors from?
