How heavy of a trailer can a V6 TRD off-road tow?

I’m sorry I am sure there is a thread somewhere but what can a V6 trd off-road double cab tow? How heavy of a trailer. New to towing we are looking at getting a camping trailer.

 

I think it's rated at 6400 lbs with a 640 or 650 hitch capacity. If I am wrong please let me know.

 

The truck is rated to pull 6500 lbs., whether it can do it the way you expect is another question. All i can say imo, anything over 3k lbs. will be a task for this truck. Personally i'd rather have my tundra back for this stuff.

 

It’s a smallish trailer that pops up to tent. Not sure on weight yet. It’s an old neighbors who is selling it for a reasonable price.

Is that weight with stock hitch?

 

If it's a pop up camper, I can't imagine it being too heavy. It should have less wind resistance as well and that makes a huge difference in towing. Your expectations will also determine what you think is adequate. Half of the towing threads on here seem to be people wanting to tow their 6,000 lb travel trailer at 80 mph at 1,500 RPMs while getting no less than 25 mpg. If that's your expectation going into it, you will be very disappointed. It's a small truck with a small V6 that likes to rev. As long you know going into it that it will prefer to be at 3-4000 RPMs and will probably only average 10-12 mpg, you'll feel much better about. Now 5-6000 lbs being towed regularly and I would want a full size, just for the extra weight of the truck and the added stability. If your neighbor would let you take it for a test drive, that would give you a better idea than we can provide here.

Lots of good info here. But if you have a 2018+, you have the tow package and should be good to go. Get a brake controller add-on if the trailer has electric brakes.

 

I know going into it gas mileage goes down. Obviously if your truck is moving more weight you won’t be as efficient! Not looking to tow all of the time either just when camping.

Any kind of “mods” to consider doing to the trucks handling/ suspension to make it easier for towing?

If it’s one of those pop-ups, nothing to it. I didn’t even need a WDH. I’ve read that a good rule of thumb is 50% of towing capacity for frequent towing. If you’re in that neighborhood then definitely use a WDH.

 

Really happy with my RedArc Elite. Super clean install in the driver's side cubby. There's a good chance however that a pop up style camper doesn't have electric brakes.

 

My pop up does have electric brakes. My old one did not. Going to be pulling it with my new truck.

 

Sounds like you have a plan in order then. Tekonsha and RedArc are the two most popular controllers on TW it seems.

 

I'd be nervous towing near capacity with my Tacoma. Just pulling my 1,500lb+ scag zero turn and the rest of my mowing gear is plenty. Trans hunts more than I'd prefer unless I throw it into sport. I came from a F250 so I'm probably just too use to not feeling a trailer...

 

I pull a teardrop that weights close to what a lot of popups weight. I’m around 3k when fully loaded with camping gear/people/etc. My 2017 SR5 pulls it like a champ and I average 17 mpg in northern Michigan. No electric brakes and no need for a WDH. I don’t think any popup will pose an issue for you.

 

Yep. The Taco is going to let you know it’s there. It’s not afraid to run in the upper rpm band though. Once there, the performance is acceptable for what the truck is.

I think a lot of people use air bags in the rear to reduce squat. The rear springs are soft for ride comfort, but will sag with a bunch of weight back there. The air bags will maintain the correct ride height. The other option would be an add-a-leaf or a new leaf pack to better support the weight. I think there are some discussions on here about upgrades to the rear suspension for towing. I've been meaning to look into it myself, but then I start thinking that I'm going to want to upgrade the front suspension too, to add a little lift and next thing I know I'm over budget lol.

Maybe some others with more experience with those upgrades will chime in. I'd be interested to hear what others have done as well.

 

There's a small Toyota button blank that'll hold the redarc knob... it can be found e-trailer.com, there's also a full cubby replacement on thingiverse, which is what I have.

 

It's a bit of a contraption, but that roadmaster accessory spring seems to get good reviews. Doesn't impact stock performance, but kicks in when loaded.
