The VDC meter shouldn't have any current running through it. It is just sensing the voltage difference between + and -. So you won't find a current spec for it. But you will want to make sure whether or not it needs an external resistor. This schematic looks right to me:



I'd have to do some digging on the shunt, but what you're saying sounds right. The load current passes through the shunt resistor, creating a voltage drop across the shunt resistor, which the ammeter then reads. This looks right to me:

Thanks! I guess my only issue now is finding what mV rating the shunt needs to be.

 

Worst case you could use a potentiometer and a resistor to build a voltage divider to test it. A 100k pot and a 100 ohm resistor with a 5V supply would get you one you can vary between 5mV and 5V, although the 100ohm resistor might get kind of warm toward the top end.

I made a cardboard template. Have maple faced 3/4" ply that I'm going to use this to cut. It'll be a base plate for a cargo system when I'm done.
