Actually it was also sold in the U.S. in the late 60s, early 70s. It was first called the 411, then the 412. It used the same engine as the bay window VW vans, which, while an air-cooled, opposed flat 4 like that in the Bug, was a different engine. Rather than the doghouse fan shroud, it had a fan housing attached to the end of the crankshaft. I’ll try to find a photo and post for those that might not have ever seen one.

I owned a 70 Squareback which was pretty cool, also vaguely remember seeing a few 412's around when I was young.

If only we knew enough back then to purchase one and hold on to it , not change it , not wreck it , not loose a race with it.
and we could retire happy on the money made on the sale price right now. it IS the most badd asss car and looks like a pin up in a bikini.

Type 3 is my favorite. I’ve had two Squarebacks and 1 Fastback. Fun little cars.

That part sticking up on the top is to hide behind and shoot between the deep U .

It's a "go ahead and make my day" SUV

I also like the high water crossing exhaust. It's like a tank without tracks, no cannon- but a 50 cal at the ready
