I had only camped at Manzanita and Summit lakes (and backpacked to Triangle Lake) so I looked up Butte Lake on the Google machine. That looks really cool how there is a cinder cone and rock flows that go to Butte Lake and Snag Lake. Did you check that out at all? Does it look like there was lava that made those flows or if it was more like rock slides?

Wow, you dug up an older one.

That's on the southern island of New Zealand. One of many areas used to film Lord of the Rings. Was there fly fishing with the spousal unit.

Hiked up cinder cone and you really get an awesome view of the lake and lava flows. Some drastically different terrains on either shore of most of the lake. Not sure how the lava rock beds formed but its cool indeed. The cinder cone hike is short but a bit of a bitch since its steep with the soft small lava rock.

Tried to find some more lava beds but the trails just vanish or down trees blocked the way.

Lassen erupted in the early 1900's. As you drive through the park, you'll pass through an area called the "devastated zone" or something like that. You can find more info on volcanic activity here. The hike down to Bumpass Hell is pretty educational as well as are some of the other features in the park. I did really like the peak though as you can get an idea as to the size of the area plus some spectacular views.
