Is a manual Tacoma really “sought after”, rare or more valuable?

I dig the manual in my 3rd gen, but really, I kinda have it by accident.

My dealer kept making me very attractive offers for my 2015 TRD Sport, which I was very happy with. The 4.0 and 5 speed auto worked very well, overall I really liked that truck, but was interested in getting features that the 2nd gen didn't have.

Broke down and went to the dealership, test drove an automatic Cement TRD Sport. Liked most of the truck (looks, sunroof, power rear window, heated leather seats), but was underwhelmed by the automatic. Maybe I went in predisposed to not like it, as I knew many had issues with it, so who knows. It certainly shifted a lot.

Was just going to leave with my 15, said to sales guy that I really like the truck, but didn't care for the trans. Then he tells me about a truck they just got in, just like the truck I drove, but with 6 speed manual. Oh crap. Next comes the expensive test drive. First time I drove a stick since I got rid of my '02 Mustang GT. Felt like home. Drove out of there with a new truck.

What's the point of this? Shit, I don't know. I will say that I wouldn't buy or not buy a manual Tacoma based on resale, I'm pretty sure you won't have issues selling either, and there will always be those that want a manual, I just wouldn't expect it to bring some sort of big premium. Unless...Toyota stops making manuals, then who knows, might be worth a few grand more to the right buyer.

Find a manual, do a test drive, you'll know if it's for you or not.

 

I assumed that the MT was going away for the 4th Gen because of the coming hybrid models. But, there was an article that talked about the TGNA-F platform and that Toyota had developed a lighter, more efficient MT for the platform. Since the Taco is the only Toyota truck that gets a manual now, it seems to confirm that it will be alive in 2023. Of course, it might have been intended for the HiLux and not the Taco, but the article was talking about the US market.

Manual for me. really enjoy driving my 3rd gen dcsb TRD OR 6mt. I just wish it had diesel torque and the mpg of a Prius.

I have not had a single auto transmission truck/car that I've enjoyed driving.

Only thing I wish I would of done different was spend a little more and get the color/package truck I wanted.

My manual was cheaper by about $1500 new than the same truck with a auto.

 

Well one can hope I guess. Would love to see the new 4runner with a manual too but thats pie in the sky. Only sliver of hope would be that the bronco and wrangler/gladiator come with a manual option so they may offer it as a point of competition. One can only hope.

I wanted an T4R MT back when they were still offered. We settled for a used V70 T5 MT as the affordable baby hauler at the time. It was kind of a mistake, but did teach us a lesson about the waste of lux brands.

They kinda hosed up the Bronco MT pairing. It should have come with the V6. Regardless, I predict seeing Broncos everywhere with a lot of MTs.

I am curious to see Toyota's response and what falls out of the TGNA-F effort as a whole.

 

Same here jamming my kid in the back of the tacoma seems almost cruel especially when he gets bigger. There is a company that can make a manual current gen 4Runner but its crazy expensive to the tune of 30k extra. Also saw the tundra referenced with 6 speed manual but history would tell us thats a typo, ignorance, or both on the part of the author.

The bronco was a letdown smaller engine offerings and no Sasquatch trim. I saw there was a petition going around after a spokesman said they would gauge interest but I'm not going to hold my breathe.

 

My teenage daughters fit in the back of my AC just fine. I've had FF car seats and boosters back there with no complaints. Hell, in that wagon with way more knee room than any Taco, it took some training to keep the girl's feet off the seat backs. That age passes quickly.


I'd sign that petition, but I'm keeping the Taco for the duration.

 

I was watching a live chat with a Bronco Engineer and he said they were under the impression that buyers would not be interested in the Sasquatch Package if getting MT but said they will consider adding the option. It is mind boggling to me that they think MT buyers do not like options on their vehicles.

 

That sounds like it's going back to the days when people bought the MT because it was cheaper than an AT and got better mileage. Nowadays we buy because we like to drive them.

 

Yup MT buyers are constantly having to make sacrifices for their transmission of choice. Touchless entry would be nice sometimes even though I like turning the key to fire up the tacoma. Still dont know why the JBL is mutually exclusive from the manuals either regardless of trim.

 

It could have been significantly more than the AT and I would have still jumped down the hole. The better than expected MPGs and arguably easier maintenance are good things on my list.

 

If I was in the market for a Tacoma I would only buy a manual but I’m impartial because I drive a 2008 manual Tacoma. I really like a manual in any car I drive but I’m probably a small percentage. Most people who see the truck is manual are surprised and say they can’t drive a manual. I think it should be a requirement to get a license but That’s not likely as most are automatic these days.

 

Thats because a manual miata is fun AF to drive around!!! Similar to s2000

 

I've traded in 15 cars, and every time it was a Manual it was not a good thing. I even had one dealer who didn't even want my trade in the moment he found out it was a Manual. I'm near Chicago and traffic is heavy so nobody wants them. I have a stick for my toy but will never get one again for a daily driver, the novelty of shifting 1000 times a day to average 18 mph gets old.

 

Where is the kick starter located on the Tacoma?

 

I love my 96 Miata. Most fun car I've ever driven.

 

There was a 2000 miata for sale the other day i almost pulled the trigger on, only had 28k miles on it

 

It is still amazing how few people (Americans) can drive a manual. My Wife's side of the family are British. Guess how many of them can drive manual? ALL of them. Most at the dealership can't drive them either. When I was ordering my truck the assistant sales manager admitted he couldn't drive manual. Really, you are a big shot and you can't drive stick? The lot porters and valets are always calling the tech's to move my truck for me. So embarrassing.

He's talking about roll starting/ push starting. Depends what you wanna call it. You can get your truck started even if your battery is dead.
