Did I pay too much?

Yesterday my Taco sprung a leak from the radiator hose. A friend of mine changed out the radiator hose, replaced the clamps, checked for other leaks, fluid levels, and added more radiator fluid. He came to my house and worked in my drive way since I couldn't drive my Taco anywhere. He charged me over $200. I didn't think of it much yesterday since he came to my place and helped me out... but now I feel like I got ripped off... ?

 

That, my friend, is not a friend. I don't know who supplied the hose, but they usually cost $15 to $25. He ripped u off.

 

Sounds a little high, but if you would have took it to the shop, they probably would have charged around that too. Plus there would have been a wait to get into the shop. Check out how much all that cost, (anti-freeze ain't cheap) and then figure out how much time it took him to do it, and see how much that comes out to. A shop will charge no less than $50 an hour most of the time! Then if you figure out he was way off, Kick his @ss! LOL

 

Yeah...That doesn't sound like friend pricing...but it's probably not far off from what you would have paid at a shop...so..it's kind of a wash.

 

Note, he did not drain and refill the antifreeze, so the part about it being expensive is a moot point. He just topped it off. $15 a gallon for the good stuff. OVER $200 IS CRAZY.....especially from a "friend". Personally, had it been one of my friends, I would have gone with him to buy the parts and supplies, and done it over a few beers. The problem I'm having with this is that he calls this guy his "FRIEND".

 

I would sleep with his sister to get even.

 

Took about an hour? Say another hour for picking up the stuff. Hose, $25. Fluid, $15. Clamps, $5.
Cash job, at $35/hr., $70.
All totals around $115.
Unless I'm missing something here, sounds kinda high.
(when I do something for a friend, there's no labor charge)

Does it matter that the OP is female?

I've heard that the Islands are expensive, but even allowing for that it sounds as if your "friend" was a bit high on his charges. I am an advocate of getting things off my chest and I wouldn't hesitate to ask him about the charges. Maybe he has a good reason and all is well. Maybe he has lousy reasons and that will help you decide to look elsewhere for a mechanically inclined friend.

 

Nah it doesn't work like that.....Yeah you got ripped off. If you have questions about repairs "Search" it first You'll get a if you don't.

Mark him off your friend list. $115 tops. Next time post up here if you can to get an idea of where you should be for the buy or repairs. Better luck next time.

 

That dude sounds like a prick to me. I would be more than willing to help a friend out with those easy repairs over a few beers or something. Especially for a cool chick that drives a tacoma. He must be hatin' because he has an unreliable domestic or something.

OK pricing but not a great deal except for the "mechanic house call" part.

Dealers here charge (in shop pricing) about $100.00 an hour + parts & supplies with some disposal fees too.

I love being my own mechanic....if someone does help me, a meal is usually a good enough payment.

 

Same here... you'd go with me to the parts store to spring for parts/supplies (or I'd give you the receipt when I got back). That, a couple of beers and a burger would be about all it took.
