Automatic parking brake adjustment?

    I know there are lots of threads regarding the e-brake adjustment.
    There is the manual way with the star wheel and then i read the method with driving backwards and pushing the e-brake pedal.

    Recently i took the drum brake apart and tried to understand the second method. But there's no way why this should work.

    Parking brake is active by pulling on the cable. A lever moves the rear shoe and a second lever moves the front shoe.
    The star wheel sets the preload tension of the shoes.
    The threaded rod with the star wheel pushes the shoes in the same way like the cylinder.
    There's no way how the star wheel should be turned automaticly to extend the rod.

    Does anyone has REALLY understood how it should work?

    It's reverse and pushing the brake pedal. Not pushing the e-brake pedal.

    backing up works under best / ideal conditions

    in that Nothing is in a bind & everything is clean

    rare after extended miles

    better to use star wheel 2-3 times a year

    Thanks for the link, but I still have trouble to understand.
    I have a photo attached.
    Orange arrow shows the direction of how the cylinder pushes the shoe.
    The adjuster moves WITH the shoe cause it is fully mounted on it. Only the spring pulls downwards, s. blue arrow. But it can't really pull because it is locked s. blue circle.
    How can the adjuster push downwards on the starwheel (pink arrow)?
    The only way would be, if their occurs a gap within the blue circle point. But in this case the adjuster would turn the starwheel pushing the rod end against itself. It should spread the rod against the shoe to eliminate the play. So there shouldn't be the notch of the adjuster...

    Ok I think I got it!
    The gap occurs on each cylinder movement because the adjuster is fully mounted to the shoe. And depending on the air gap the lever turns the starwheel downwards.
    At least the stars are not worn down like in the link above...

    Joys of the Internet.
    Toyota rear drums are adjusted by using E brake, not backing up. American manufacturers use the system that require you to back up to adjust the rear brakes. other Asian manufacturers may use similar tech as Toyota, I don’t know

    As far as I have understand the adjuster, it only needs "spreaded shoes". But the adjuster is mounted on the top next to the cylinder, so the maximum effect should be achieved with the brake pedal not with the e-brake.

    Just to finalize this thread, I want to a add the "best method" of how to adjust the parking brake to the perfect level:
    Turn the adjuster wheel to make is loose and mount the drum back again with two wheel nuts. Then just push the brake pedal as often as you hear the adjuster clicking. It start with 3 clicks per push, then later 2 and 1 click. Finally you won't hear any click. This means, that the gap between shoe and drum is minimized to its mechanical calibrated level.
    Make sure that the drum still rotates with small drag.

    So is it Pressing Brake while backing up or pressing The emergency brake while backing up

    Another tip when working on brake lines:
    Use two wrenches to maximize grip.
    Helped me to prevent ripping of the surface.
