Need help from someone with a 2020 and Premium Sound

yeah I haven’t looked into it real close yet, I was hoping something could be done between speaker replacement and maybe a shaker or something.
I was thinking these speakers were 2 ohm or something weird, and had to be careful with having enough power from the factory amp. I could be thinking of a different year.

 

if you are looking to take out the factory jbl sub to regain cubby space but might want to add a sub down the road look into the self powered hide a way models, i had a kicker version under my driver seat 8" aluminum cone driver with I believe a 150 amp built in and it came with an adjustable bass knob. I kept mine dead center and had plenty of kick.

As for the front door and dash speakers with Toyota they kind of wire them together if you take out the door speaker and don't use a harness adapter you may very well lose the front dash tweeters if you retain the factory wiring.
Rear door speakers should be fine to swap out with no issues.
Also in some cases the factory stereos in some brands send a digital signal to the amp for volume vs an actual voltage increase to feed the amp input more.voltage for it to amplify the volume.

People ask why I go for the top end factory sound systems if I just.plan to swap out parts. Its easier to reuse some of the factory wiring for new speakefs and in cases where they doesnt / won't work i just use the factory wire locations to run new wiring.

 

Ideally I’d replace all speakers and just remove the sub. And still have an ok bass out of the door speakers.

 

you can do that, but since all the speakers and the sub are wired in a series, you need to place a resistor across the sub speaker wires to emulate a 2 ohm load. Can’t recall which resistor will do that, but google can help.

 

Also keep in mind of you do that and use the factory stereo its set up to send the low frequency signs to the sub channel so unless you do more that just replace the factory speakers especially if it's the JBL system you may not get any or.much bass at all out of the door speakers.
Most if not all factoey stereos are set up to only send certain frequency ranges to certain speakers.
Its a pain but you can get around it but you are talking about bypassing all factory amplification and some aftermarket amps can remove the factory equalizer settings "not talking bass mid and tremble control" and then get a true full range signal to send to whatever you wish.
I have done and researched car audio for 20 years and with everything integrated now sadly with systems like the JBL set up its not as easy as it used to be.

Perhaps an amplified under seat amp is the way to go then, I see that there are some that will take line level directly out of the JBL system. Whether they are 2Ohm I do not know.

 

I have an 18 with the jbl and was piss poor for any bass response. The speakers in my motorcycle helmet are better. I pulled the oem sub and swapped in a shallow mount running of the factory amp. Been a good year at least and sounds good with no issues. The crossover is the factory amp is janky and cuts out a lot

 

I do believe they are a 2 ohm load.
You can find amps that will fit under the seat that can power 2 and 4 ohm loads depending on the speakers.
I had a Jeep Liberty that had an odd setup where the front speakers factory wired together was a 3 ohm load and the rears were a 5 ohm load and that was the factory setup with base head unit.

 

My 2016 JBL premium sounds really great. The bass is actually too powerful I have to turn it down -2 notches since it’s too much bass. This is coming from someone who had Bose and Harman karman in their past vehicles. Not sure why some other people find the bass weak.

 

It’s not so much the brand of equipment as it is a persons quality of hearing. I mean, some people think that Creed is a great band. That’s a perfect example of someones hearing being fucked up.

 

Some like bass heavy sound, others more balanced

Sound and sound quality can vary quite a bit between people.

I have seen and witnessed some that would buy. Car with a custom stereo rip it all out and replace.with cheap crappy Pyle brand drivers and thought it sounded better with a less than 200 dollar head unit.
Me i generally can't stand factory stereos from manufacturers and aside from my wife's Corolla and the Tundra we currently have on lease that we will trade in for my taco that we are buying I didn't see the point.
But my Tacoma will have an upgraded aftermarket system.
But even then I probably go above and beyond most.
Looking at 1200.00 Kenwood head units 3 way component sets for the front matching coaxial for the rear doors and reuse factory sub location but with a much better driver amplified across the board DSP everything.
But again I do what I enjoy.

 

Bass is subjective and varies on how much people can enjoy/tolerate. About 10 years ago i decided upgrading car audio was over. I loved having subs and playing music The JBL sub is sufficient nowadaysand does the job for me. Sounds better with some songs then others. Your mileage may vary. I have a 15" home theatre sub and want another.

 

You absolutely should. I have two 10" and one 12" in my theater room and am always on the lookout for a deal on another.

Besides that, multiple subs help remove null waves giving you better, fuller sound anyway.

 

My son has an ‘18 OR, non-JBL. I have a ‘20 Pro w/ JBL. Our EQ settings are exactly the same. The non-JBL, hits way harder than the JBL using BT (iPhones) as the source. I actually thought my truck didn’t have a sub! For whatever reason, it seems like the JBL doesn’t like my iPhone. Change the source and the sound seems to come alive (more bass) ... at least in my experience.

 

I agree with what others have said, my 2016 W/ JBL sounds great. I typically leave my settings at T:+3, M:+1, B: +2; volume around 30 or little less.

Also, I am not sure I would call Hotel California a song with alot of Bass, at least maybe not in the Sub frequency range. if you really wanted to test out the sub, try a song that actually hits in the very low range, even if it isn't a song that you would typically like, it is a way to test the sub. most songs like this would be rap songs. I like the bass line of T-Pain's "Booty Work" or ying yang twin's "Salt Shaker", or usher's "Yeah."

Side note: I'm not bashing Hotel California, in fact, it's one of my favorite songs, i just wouldn't consider it a good song to test whether a Sub woofer is working or not.

 

If you want a good track to test a system one that i have used is the Phantom of the opera

Pipe organs can hit very low natural frequencies as well as very high and overall to me has a good consistent range for frequency response.
Digitally created bass isn't the same.

I also enjoy a very wide range of music everything from classical and instrumental to club, techno, hip hop and pretty much everything in between

 

@rob4092xx I remembered you were asking about the bass in the 2020 with JBL and I was noticing something similar in mine. Sounded like most of the bass was coming from the door and it just didn't seem to bump quite as hard as my 2017.

I was playing around with settings today and I noticed that when I connected via CarPlay, if I hit the audio button and then selected sound, the bass levels were set much lower. I bumped it all the way and it does MUCH better. The only one that the bass was turned up was the radio, which I never use. I guess each audio source has its own settings. After doing that, it's back to shaking my mirrors like my 2017 did. I just wanted to throw that out there just in case you did what I did and only set the bass on one source.

 

I've been listening via Android Auto from day 1 and regardless of where that bass slider is, the bass is still coming from mostly the doors. It bumps, but just not from the woofer.
