Lower ball joint replacement for the 1st time

Hey gang, this is my first time posting a thread so bare with me.
I'm collecting data to do my lower ball joints. The previous owner never had them done so they are still riveted in. If some of you more experienced fellas can walk me through the procedure or direct me to thread that does I would be most grateful.

We're all here to help; first off here are the part numbers -

$201 43340-39585 Toyota Genuine Parts - Joint Assy, Lwr Ball (43340-39585)

43340-39585 - Left side(driver side)

$213 43330-39815 Toyota Genuine Parts - Joint Assy, Lwr Ball (43330-39815)

43330-39815 - Right side(pass side)

The rest is pretty easy; since you'll be doing them for the first time, make sure you soak the bolts in penetrating oil. That and expect the ball joint to scare ya when it 'pops' out of place.

 

Could you share a picture? I believe the ball joint itself has always been bolted on and the rivets I think you're referring to are the ones one the LCA that hold in the tapered mount for the ball joint

Yes that is correct, a friend of mine had mentioned it and while he is not a Toyota guy he is a talented mechanic .
so I crawled under there earlier and sure enough three big fat rivets . I need to remove those right ?

 

What rivets do you keep talking about?

It's just 4 bolts and the nut that holds the ball joint to the lower control arm.

Just take your time and don't rush anything as some have broken their bolts that hold the ball joint in place. Sucks when you have to remove your spindle to get it all apart.

 

No those 3 rivets are apart of the lower control arm. The lower ball joint is bolted to the spindle directly above that

I was about to say "there are no rivets on the ball joint at all anywhere"

 

Oh ok ! I see It looked like the balljoint was part of that lower assembly

I knew instantly what you were talking about because I had a mid 80s VW that had the balljoints riveted in place. First ball joints I ever changed in my life and I was so damn confused.

haha everything I've worked on since then has had the balljoints bolted in place

 

I call my local steelership to check for recall and bam got then replace under a recall wont hurt to look into imo

 

The recall campaign is still active?

 

Did this job two weekends ago, it's not too difficult. If your tie rods or ball joints won't separate with hammering like the Low Range video, you'll want to use a Pitman puller. Also recommend picking up 8 new bolts for the LBJs (90119-10933).

 

Just call the dealer with your bin they can tell you if ur truck still meets the recall .

 

Yes, I'm a novice when it comes to mechanics . I went the other direction in automotive, autobody.
So, do I just ring up my nearest local Yota dealer and hit em up for LBJ replacement ?
