Correct differential oil?

Hey, I have a 2008 Tacoma SR5 V6 in a six-speed manual. I have the TRD Sport. I was planning on changing out the differential fluid in the rear, front, and transfer case. I bought some of the Redline

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 for all three on the recommendation of the guys at O'Reilly. Just wondering, will this fluid work for my particular truck or do I need to return it and get something different/with additive? Any help or recommendations would be great!

Hey thanks. Just saw other threads saying that it might need an additive for the sport but didn't know if that would apply to the manual transmission. Reading the description in the link you sent, it says maybe not the best for a manual? Any concerns? Would you go for something else or just stick with it?

 

Redline is a great product, you got good advice, should be good to go as far as oil but remember to replace your crush washers and loosen the fill plugs 1st

Great, I'll go with the Redline MT-90 for the transmission and stick with the Redline

Odd that the 2014 4x4 calls for a 75W-85 GL5 gear oil. I could only find this.

Changing all the fluids made for a much quieter ride.

 

Redline sells differential specific 75W-85 gear oil. It’s a little pricy but worth it.

 

The rear diff should be a LSD so you would need additive for that, the front diff and transfer case take regular gear oil, not sure about the standard trans I have an auto.

 

The Redline apparently already has friction modifiers added for a limited-slip differential in the

75w-90 so I guess that will work with no additional additive needed. Contacted the dealership just out of curiosity to see what they would say. They recommended 80w-90 in the rear, 75w-90 in the transfer case, and 85w-95 in the front. Also said I didn't need an additive (although this truck should be an LSD so I don't think that is correct).

 

I have a 2008 X-Runner, and the Redline has worked just fine for me without any added "friction modifiers." But make sure it's their GL-5 gear oil. Their GL-4 oil is made for manual transmissions, so it doesn't have it. If you buy the wrong one, you just have to buy a tube of LSD additive and squirt that into your diff pumpkin.

For my X-Runner, Redline recommends:
4 quarts of 75W90 GL-5 gear oil for the diff, &
3 quarts of MT-90 75W90 GL-4 for the manual transmission.

 

crap!..... I thought I had read on this forum that Redline 75W - 85 GL-5 gear oil was best to put in my 2 wheel drive rear dif that is LSD....... is it a big deal between the 85W vs 90W? I actually will be getting the 75w - 85w GL5 delivered today through Amazon

 

Frankly I doubt you'll see any difference between the 85 and 90 weight oil.

I always go to the Redline website, type in my vehicle specifics, and they give me their recommendation for engine, transmission, and diff oil. (I only use Redline in my transmission and differential.)

not sure if you changed your fluids yet, but it is significantly easier to access everything if you remove the spare tire first, unless you're doing it on a lift.

 

Thanks for that........ I finished it up about an hour ago .... I didnt remove spare but should have .... it prob would have been better if I bought the 90W since I am in the warmer climate here in Florida but I did just find that Toyota spec for my truck is the 85W so until next change time the 85W will be fine

I bought my 2006 Tacoma Pre-Runner DCLB 2yrs ago and according to Car Fax records it’s time to change my Rear Differential Oil. Note: LSD Only sticker is seen on my truck.

After reading several threads, I have just returned the Mobil 1

75w 90 LS back the local auto parts store and now have order Red Line 75w 90 (GL-5) online since no local auto parts carries it. Red Line is currently $23.53 per bottle and ordered 4 just in case I spilled on the floor.

I am not going to add any additional additives only the gear oil itself as I’ve read that Red Lines 75w 90 already has the LSD additive and several people with 2008 Tacoma and lower have no issues.

I will report back on here with an update.

 

For you manual transmission guys, just make sure you use a GL4 fluid in the gearbox. Lucas and Royal Purple perform pretty well too. I bought a gallon of the Redline a while back for the manual transmission only, and have been happy with it.

 

I've been using that in my 2008 X-Runner for about a decade, and you are correct. RedLine's GL5 gear oil already has the LSD "friction modifiers" so nothing else is required.

To piggyback on what winkel said above, always use GL-4 in the manual transmission.
