Question for all you rooftop tenters: Do you find it to be a PITA to pack up camp every time you want to go somewhere? That's the reason I have been holding off on getting one (definitely not my empty wallet.) Unless I set up like a dummy tent or something to hold the spot if I want to go trail riding or fishing or anything that requires me to drive I'd have to pack up camp every time, right?

I was worried about that, which is why I waited on finding a good deal on a FSR tent or something similar that sets up or down in 2 minutes.

Some tents can definitely take longer, but also have pretty sweet features. If you know you are going to be packing up and down often, get a hardshell for quick deploy or something like a fsr that deploys quickly and packs quickly (and you can keep your bedding in).

I held out for a long time on a RTT, researched for years, watched YouTube videos, and by the end of it had myself convinced i needed to shell out $3k+ for a hard-shell tent because i thought that's what I needed. I spent a bunch of time thinking it was going to take way too long to setup and pack up a soft sided RTT and that was going to become a hindrance to my allotted time for adventure. After all that, I ended up buying the new smittybilt gen 2 soft sided tent and i couldn't be happier.

The amount of time it takes to set the tent up and pack it back down is nominal. Unless you're sleeping under a camper shell, the amount of time it takes to pack down a soft sided RTT is no longer than packing up a normal ground tent or a cot tent. Its very easy and intuitive and i spent $1300 instead of $3000.

Overall I'm incredibly happy with my RTT setup.

Sorry I don't have any good camping pics yet, I just got it recently and lost the camera i took on my first camping trip.

Imo...Soft sided RTT set up and packing time depends on the climate that you camp in. I had a rack mounted CVT soft sided RTT for a few years and will say they are miserable; if you're attempting to pack up in pouring rain or snow.

It is definitely a trade off. Our camping has changed a little in terms of gear, packing, etc.
I have become much more light, efficient and organized. When the entire family is along for the trip we have more stuff which requires more packing up but at the same time there are more hands to do it. We don’t stay at campgrounds often, but if we do we can leave camp all set up and just take down the tent for truck use, takes two minutes. We do mostly dispersed camping and move often so we know the routine. If it is just a buddy and myself like in the fishing trip above, breaking camp completely takes no more than 10 minutes. Because we are out in the middle of nowhere I could leave my camp and just pack up RTT but I just don’t trust other people enough so I take everything. It also allows us the option to move if we choose to.
Don’t forget, you would be packing up all your stuff with a ground tent anytime you decided to move spots as well.
Pros and cons just depends on you and your style camping.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Our camping situation varies; sometimes we move to a different spot each time and sometimes we stay in one place for the whole trip. I'm like you and while I don't trust anyone to not steal my shit, when I leave my ground camp set up everything I've left behind has never been messed with when we return. Glad to hear that RTT's aren't any more troublesome to pack.

Have you considered a teardrop? Yes, it's a trailer, but they have a lot of advantages.

We have one, and to me, it is a game changer.

Everyone has a different threshold, right? I totally don't have a problem packing up twice sometimes even three times a day when wheeling / swimming / fishing... Same for my brothers... We have and do it so often, its second nature and easy.... Our cousin on the other hand.... Absolutely HATES the RTT process... I also feel a Hardshell RTT would be too much for him as well lol .....

    Different strokes for different folks....

There's a couple around there, I just remember Tall Oaks being one of the more popular ones. We used to spend a lot of time out in the area when we lived in MD/WV.

I'll be going back for sure. That place was awesome! Got to do some rock climbing and white water rafting. Was a great time!
