i saw a smallish inflateable boot for $22 that will cover the slider portion. its easy to toss in and pull out via the folding/removeable cap windows for the times ya need it and those ya dont. now that i know the expensive ones dont seal all that well anyway, this might be the way i go. Xpel tape will be used just in case. my bikes have been employin this stuff for decades and my downhill rig is covered in it.

nuthin on the roof. the massive rack/box system on my passat killed MPG which brought me back to a truck with equal driving cost, more storage and so on. also im short. at 5'9", gettin the 42lb DHR on and off the passat was no party and i couldnt begin to imagine the joys of doin the same thing on the taco. celebrate the T-2 with me!

thinkin sliders with screens is the ticket for camping and dog hauling as well. if it was just me gettin to shit in back, the windoors would be on my list.

thanx for all the tips man.

I had a leer cap on an older truck... i can't recommend their products. The gelcoat faded quickly and the hardware didn't last. The company wouldn't stand by the product. i boght an A.R.E. hard tonneau cover for my 2009 tacoma. The quality is much better than leer

after 4 years of dogs in the wagon, i cant handle breathin in and bein covered in dead fur or the loss in resale this time. no amount of brushin and washin of dogs or car could get all that hair outta everything. in the back they go! odus loved the open bed of my silverado and they both dig the taco too, however layals issue is proximity to me. shed ride in my lap if id allow it but would settle on restin her chin on my shoulder for hours at a time.

no quote on the 100XR yet but i can tell ya the price on a loaded ARE Z isnt far off yer Leer. for now, im leanin that way but i have months to decide. and yeah, im diggin the clean window thing. mine get a bad case of dog nose and dust is a real problem in the desert. i can guess how thick it would get between the cab and cap when i hit the dirt roads. folder!

yep. im lookin at the plastic to steel "seal" at the gate and thinkin theres potential for trouble. seems some creativly placed weather stripping would be a easy and cheap solution for my needs.

    ps: neil peart is gawd

now i got nice weather, but i use my bed rail to secure the dog in the bed (middle of the cab). there's nothing so safe about the cap unless you're just looking to protect from sun/rain... with limited air movement no matter what windows you got (ive had em all), i always worried about doggie when traveling in areas over 90 degrees.. CO is also a concern... don't aftermarket your engine. i know i can smell a non factory car from a block away... muttly is more sensitive and smaller.

I have a Leer 100XR with headliner. It's great. I also have a bed rug, but NOT the full $300+ system. Check out the $99 Bed Rug Bed Mat .... It's bottom part only, and fully removable (with a shell you don't need to affix it with velcro). It's very comfortable and durable.

Also I would recommend against a boot between the cab and shell. It will wear off the paint on your cab.

EDIT - and oh yeah. I recommend you get roof rack rails installed at the time of purchase. True you can add them later, but if you get them installed at the factory, leaks are covered in the warranty. Adding the rack rails to my Leer was around $190. Now I can add a rack later if I wish.

doin the same thing with layla, shes just wacky enough where she might jump and chase. odus stays put no matter what. he learned his lesson many years ago when he jumped out to follow us into a krismiss tree farm and nearly hung himself.

the main deal is to provide a little semi-secure storage and a cushy place to crash at the bike races i go to so im not payin for hotels and condos. i figure with open windows and the ac on, it should stay kinda cool in back but i could be dreamin. whats yer opinion? once the big summer hits, they stay home anyway. just too hot here no matter what. i like yer 90d cut off.

no plans to make it sound cool or race a 911.

They offer "windoors", solid glass windows that open outward. But they also offer "vented windoors", which have a small slider window in the center of the windoor for those who need ventilation like you do. Also, if you order a new shell, you can order say a windoor on the drivers side, with a standard slider on the passenger side for the dogs, for the best of both worlds.

not a terrible idea. ive seen the vented "outdoorsman" windoors on the ARE's. still not convinced i need em for the setup im lookin at and the way i intend to use it but ill keep this in mind as i prepare funds. lots of good input guys. thanx!

i saw that too and it sure would make things easy for many folks. my experience with air matresses in a non heated area is they get cold as a ex wife no matter how many blankets ya use. seein as how im very often in high elevations on these trips, ill pass, but would work nice for lowland jaunts if thats what ya do. i gotta go get pics and specs of that sweet padded carpet kit i mentioned above then start a thread. im thinkin some of you tacoheads will dig it.

You don't have to get a rack. Just the rails. It's a good addition for resale value.

Why not just trim the "connector" Bedrug material between the tailgate and the truck bed? It does trap leaves and dirty that the dogs bring in but no water there.

Thats an idea, but then you'd have unbound edges of the rug.

I dont know if that stuff would unravel or not.

OP: if you wanna crash in the back, the bedrug is deifinitely sweet! put a couple z-rests in there and you're living large. I've tried the AC/Heat thing, and it works better if you have a little fan to put in the slider..either battery op. or get a little inverter (can do dvd's that way too.)

There is plenty of windflow for your dogs with the tip out windows. I was too worried about this but as I was told and learned quickly it is fine for the dogs and my dealer has the leer 100 with the tilt out windown with 2 german shepards. Usually the leers are a bit less then the ARE. They are both wonderful and well built caps.
