Come down to Austin after KC asap. There is a pretty damn awesome looking Off-road park near Dallas I've never been to, maybe NW OHV Park.?.
Come down to Austin area as soon as possible, get some Franklin BBQ, yes, stand in the line, bring beer & your chair & meet people while waiting. Hipcamp is probably your friend for booking campsites & being away from crowds while meeting interesting owners. I say, make reservations (because of Covid) to hit up Barton Springs a couple hours to relax one day. Enter from the south side & sunbathe on the hill. Ask people around you about things that are open & available while out there. If you get no answers, go to S Lamar & get some Ramen TatSuya and then head over to the east side to explore a little before going back to camp. If ABGB is back open, check for live music there too.

I went to browns and snooze for tacos in Austin. Didn’t have a chance to even think about music this time around had my dog with me. I ended up kipping up in the cab instead of the bed, AC was a nice luxury to have. Sleeping was a bit tight but doable. So I just parked up at rest stops every night, didn’t worry about camping sites. Noted on the ramen for next time though. Didn’t do Barton springs, but I did get to the auditorium dog park and my dog was able to swim. Cool place. And we hung out at zilker park. Someone mentioned the algae was back again but my dog had already jumped in and drank a gallon of water by that point, and she’s fine now (that was like a week ago). No problems.

I'd book it Houston the next day, not really sure where to camp stay but I can tell you my 3 fave moderate eating spots. Blue Water has better Cajun food than most of Louisiana, Kenny & Ziggy's probably rivals the Bronx for fine Jewish delicatessen. Lastly, a lil known place called the Petrol Station serves the best beers on tap, chill ass vibe & burgers or a Reuben to die for.

I wish I had remembered your post when I was in Houston. The only night I had a hotel room (I needed laundry and a bed, had been in the back seat for a week by that point) was Houston Friday night. I decided I wanted pizza. I wanted Houston’s best NY style pizza. You can call me an idiot now. I found a few news articles.... written by Houston for Houston about NY pizza. Who had never been to Brooklyn.....I didn’t think of that until after I was eating. The dough was close but everything else was completely wrong. The only thing they did right was put the pepperoni on after the pizza was cooked.

On to Louisiana, I'd leave Houston in the morning & Barrell through all the way to Lafayette, LA. In Lafayette, you can take Hwy49 N to Get 90 E. Take Hwy 90 E, drive to St. Francesville via going through New Roads, LA. Should be some Air BnB/Camp sites b/w New Roads & St Francesville. I'm from Louisiana, trust me, these are the areas you wanna see.
From St. Francesville, bolt towards New Orleans, stay where ever you can but try to hang out mostly on Frenchman St., & In the Bywater area. A drive uptown will probably be interesting too. Stay away from Bourbon, you'll get that same vibe on Frenchman without the tourists.

I went from Houston out to Lafayette. I stopped and had a brain blast, checked out where catahoula parish was. Ended up rerouting instead of NOLA and then up to Greenville I went up toward Catahoula instead. There was piss all to do there even catahoula lake was meh. But that’s what I expected and it was still cool to see catahoula (I have a catahoula cur) and to bring her there.

You can easily make it from NOLA to Panama City Beach the next day. Will be a short almost refreshing drive. If you can, camp at St. Andrews State Park at the east end of the beach & check out the strip at night if you're not too tired.

Once the COVID has gone and I move to Austin i will definitely do another shorter road trip out to PCB from Austin and then back. Skipped Florida entirely this time. Wasn’t up for partying anyway, had the dog with me.

After that, someone else may need to chime in. I've beat up the paths from Austin to Panama City Beach many times, ask me anything about anything between here & there along the I-10 corridor. Guess the only thing I forgot is, instead of actually staying in Houston, you could camp down in Galveston that night. I love Galveston, it's a weird mix of coastal reggae / Texas / Cajun / trashy side. It's a great mix & there's a place called 'The Spot' I never miss when going, all the best!!!

I had to skip Corpus and Galveston. Absolutely wanted to go but they seem like party towns. I would want to go (a) with the wife to party and (b) without the dog.... I had nowhere to let the dog be, plus this whole contagion thing.

Piss on the cities and the take out, eat camp food and see the state. Palo Duro, Caprock Canyons, Davis Mountains, Big Bend, Enchanted Rock, float the Frio, drive to the south end of PINS and pee of the jetty rocks. You can see pavement, people, and restaurants anywhere, we have stuff in Texas that you can only see in Texas.

This is a cool way to stagger through the hill country without going WAY out of your way to parks that take days to see ending at Garner State Park. There are neat towns like Lukenbach & Bandera slightly off this trail that would be cool additions semi going in the direction you're trying to head in.. eventually south heading back east..

okay. I did that route roughly. Went past the frio and would have stopped but had my dog. Maybe once we move.

one recommendation. I ended up kipped up near San Antonio for the night so I did the trip northward. The view you get as you come around and turn into the hills west of San Antonio....amazing. If you recommend that trip to anyone else, I highly recommend going from San Antonio up.

Central Texas West of i35 is pretty good for dirt roads, just keep off the private property and you'll be good. There's some good county roads that go through large ranches with water crossings and beautiful views.

Purple paint on fence posts and signs marks the property, but sometimes it won't be labeled. Best to stick to the county roads and not pull off the road too far. One pissed rancher can cause a county to close the road. Also, close the gates lol. They really hate it when you don't do that.

I was thinking about this the other day, wasn't sure on your timeline, sounds like you got around pretty good. Hard to navigate the heat & Covid. Glad you enjoyed & made it home safe with the lucky Catahoula!

navigating with COVID actually helped me. I wasn’t tempted to stop and do the frio float because like hell was anyone wearing a mask. I wasn’t sad I missed out on downtown music and crowded bars. Etc etc. I wasn’t sad I missed out on Barton springs (but I think that was open?). The heat helped - I had the windows down at 95. Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t do that in a business suit every day if I had to wear one, but the goal of the trip to Texas was to see how I’d handle the heat. Both me and the dog handled it fantastically. So y’all have a future Texan here. Sorry guys, just another infiltrator to Austin. I see Tesla is looking to build a huge factory there actually.
