From the pic, this looks like a clear coat failure.

While you can buff and polish and protect as much as you want, nothing will protect like clear coat.

Considering the body panels and the gaps, it is my opinion that this will continue to grow over time. More than likely, this "spider webbing" of the clear coat is due to careless refueling or "oopsies" when removing the gas handle. The gas will affect the clear coat over time.

This is a repair issue, not a recondition issue.

    Get it resprayed.

    Thanks!

The plan was to sand or polish and then hit it with clear. My worry is the bad spots chipping off and doing damage to the paint in the process. I don't want to do more harm than good.

He takes good care of it, but it sits outside at park-n-ride lots. It did (does?) have some paint issues on the wheels also. Of course, that wasn't done in the same factory, but it might have been something the original owner did? He picked it up used about 10yrs ago. It was also hit a couple times. So, it is potentially an issue from the blending.

When the clear coat does that, its because it is brittle.

More than likely, it is from gas dripping out and sitting on the ledge of the bumper, in that body gap. The clear is probably completely gone underneath the rolled edge of the fender and bumper.

This happens, a lot. Especially when you dont get that rinsed out well enough.

Best to remove all damaged layers, even from around the area within 6-8 inches and sand down and respray.

6-8 inches is definitely more than I am comfortable with. Too easy to go through the paint completely.

    Thanks again!

Brother, I'm sure that you knew better, but we all do as you say stupid shit. I'm constantly reminding people, please take care of you back, because you don't want to wind up like me. Ice and heat will help. If you have to work, try and get some light duty, or just be extremely careful over the next week. I missed 3 days of walking from a major sneezing attack this week. Take it from a crippled expert(unfortunately), fucked up backs suck. If the problem persists, consider getting some x-rays, and they'll tell you if something more detailed is needed. Take care.

LoL! If it was mine, I would experiment. Actually, I have. Fucking shocking what a polisher can do with pinstripes, a partially torn up bumper cover on the Taco, and some battle damage that my wife did to a rental. That polisher has paid for itself too many times over.

I got some of that. Generally have to have my arm go numb for The Stranger.:rofl:

Well TW, I just rolled 139K miles on my truck, and I guess it's time to sell it and get a Smart Car. Nahhh, just kidding. No way I'm getting rid of this truck. Even though I don't off road currently, I just enjoy it too much. I have thought about trading it for a 2 WD Crew Cab TRD with E locker. At least then I might squeeze out another 2mpg on the highway, and I wouldn't have to worry about 4WD maintenance and costs. But most likely, I'll just keep it, never know when that 4WD might come in handy.
