Have any of ya'll converted the 500 Black Magics to HID? I saw in another thread that I can't find now that they were a PITA to convert. Whats the difference between these and the regular 500's other than the black?

Yeah that would be the thread lol. I hate to thread jack though so do you happen to know why they are so hard to convert? I mean on diagrams of the dimensions they look identical. Just looks like the reflector is a different color. My whole truck is black with a touch of red so I kinda wanted to keep with that theme. I hate chrome and the reflectors on the standard 500's would drive me nuts.

The reason the black magics are different, is that there is almost like a bulls eye shaped black plastic piece that fits around the bulb. It is what gives the black appearance, and yet still reflects light the same as a non-black magic light. It still has a chrome reflector, but it appears black because of the plastic inside there.
The reason I returned mine and opted to convert a set of hella 700ff's to HID is that the HID bulbs didnt seem to be able to fit the same as the halogen, unless maybe you found a smaller HID bulb.

Havent seen any real succesful black magic conversions, but if youre up for a challenge, go for it!!

and I should add.. I bought a set of the Hella 500 tints before I bought the hella 700s. If I had gone for the 500's I would have put the tint on them, accomplishing the same effect as the black magic lights. If anyone wants the tints, let me know and I'll sell them to u cheap.

Won't a set of H3c HID bulbs fit in the black magic without modification? This is what I am thinking about doing.

I'm thinking now of doing the hella 500 with the color shields on it. This way I know I will be able to do the H3 and not have to mess around and guess the H3c will fit.

What's the difference in the 500 and 500ff in turns of beam pattern. I want to use them mainly for rural night driving to complement my high beams.

Yea thats what most people end up doing.. much easier and no guessing or wasting money. If you want a set of the tinted color shields i'll sell them to you. I bought them before deciding to use hella 700ff instead of 500, so i have no use for them.

I'd say use 500 FF, not regular 500. My 700FF converted to HID are awesome.. great throw of light
