Tacoma family. How’s everyone doing? First post here. So please be kind. I’m well versed in other forums just new to this one.

Iv got Medium duty Dakar’s, fox 2.0 extended length remote resi shocks (part number:985-24-118)

I’ll jump right to the questions And leave the explanation for the end if it’s necessary. How much travel should be left in the shocks with the bumpstop fully compressed. If extended bumpstops are recommended, how much taller should I go? Assuming different brands compress at different rates, does the brand matter when deciding on a bumpstop height? I’m not bombing across the desert. I live in New York. Just tackling crappy paved roads and some fire roads. Been thinking of doing a u-bolt flip and upgrading the bumpstops.

if you care to read the full explanation, here it is. So In the pictures you can see the shock is just about fully compressed. You’ll also see the bump stop about a quarter inch from the frame. This looks way to close for comfort. I’d imagine the shock would bottom out before the bumpstop is fully compressed. I’m assuming the shocks are a little long for this application. Fox’s website says they’re for a 3.5-5” lift setup. I’m only at about 2.5” loaded with my usual 150lbs in the bed. It was part of a headstrong kit so I didn’t think much of it. I fully intend on keeping the shocks because the droop is pretty insane so I’m assuming the only other option is bumpstops. Iv taken some pretty good bumps on the highway and the frame doesn’t look like the bumpstop has hit it yet so I can only assuming, I’m Fully compressing the shock. Any advice would be great. Thanks for looking

    Welcome, man!

Yes, you definitely want to space up the bumpstop. Have you felt any jarring hits yet? Hopefully not

Superbumps from @Wheeler's Off-Road Inc will fix that problem easily.

While you're at it, flip your Ubolts too. They sell a kit for that too.

Those shocks look a little long to me. You said you have 2.5" in the rear, it doesn't look like it, by how close your bump stop is to hitting. I have 2.75" lift in the rear and I have way more than a 1/4" between my bump stop and frame. Yours looks a little too close for comfort for me, especially off road.

With the spacers and longer bolts that they also sell. The Super Bumps compress to the same height as stocks. But muuuuch more cushiony

Pretty sure the rear Superbumps stop compressing higher than stock. The rubber may compress the same, but they are sitting up on a perch, that I believe makes full compression higher up than the stock bump.

Hm, I always under the impression the perch was factored in somehow when they described it. I’ve been wrong many times before though, she’ll tell you.

Is that a little built in bump on your shock? You could easily zip tie a block of wood or a hockey puck on the top part (frame side) until you decide what way you are gonna go.

@Wheeler's Off-Road Inc will chime in at some point.

I know waaay back when I ordered my original lift for my truck. They said my Bilstien rears would either need a 1.5 lift minimum OR Superbumps... which led me to believe the Superbumps compress higher than the stock bumps.

I've always considered the rubber bumps on shocks like that as the emergency "shit I fucked up" bump.

When accounting shock travel vs bump travel, I measure the shock travel I have minus that bump.

Yeah, if he installs these Super Bumps, he'll definitely be riding on his bumps all the time. This can't be right, can it?

I'm assuming his pic is at full compression... if not, there's big problems.

On the way to work there’s a transition from pavement to concrete. Two of them actually. That’s where it hits pretty hard especially at 70. It hits hard enough that I’m assuming it’s the shocks bottoming out

That’s as compressed as I could get it. I have the passanger side front tire on a hill so the drivers rear is as compressed as I could get it in the driveway. So those pictures is with that tire tucked into the wheel well. It was just meant to show the shock travel left with how far away the bump stop is

yea. It’s a little quarter inch think rubber pad. I guess that’s designed to act as a last line of defense before jamming the piston into the top of the shock

Even if it's at full compression, it's still real close to bottoming out. @Tacoclifford you got a pic of your truck to see how it sits?

Glad you said that. I've been thinking about doing Timbrens or Sumos... If the Sumos buck like that, they are out of the equation.

You’re most likely right. I just checked their site and their universal kit states this:

Our micro-cellular polyurethane bumpstop and steel bracket setup is tuned to progressively provide a bumpstop clearance similar to a factory Tundra/Tacoma rear bumpstop; we've taken into consideration the approximate 1/2" thick flip plates most manufacturers are using when we designed the overall height of our bracket and bumpstop to provide maximum up-travel.

But their Tacoma specific doesn’t

Like if the suspension or just the truck itself?

But that was my concern, that the shock is almost bottomed out and the bump stop isn’t all that close to even contacting the frame. Let alone compressing enough to stop the axle from moving up further
