BMW drivers are fearless until their warranty runs out and they get their first repair bill.

After that point, every unusual sound, smell, or blinking light strikes paralyzing fear into their bank account.

They're not necessarily bad cars, but an out of warranty $1500 repair bill for a water-cooled alternator is an attention grabber.

LOL. I have a neighbor who owned a 5 series BMW for a couple of years. She described it as an abusive relationship.

Not sure I understand BMW's business model but I guess it works.

I've figured out why BMW, Audi, Mercedes and other luxury cars are such shit. Status. Us normal people buy Toyota's because they will run for a long time and can be repaired for relatively little money. Just think how much "status" you get from buying a $150K shit box that will last only as long as the warranty and costs a fortune to repair after. Nothing says I've got money to burn better than driving around in a BMW.

It’s similar to Range Rover’s business model, people with money will buy BMWs for the status symbol they provide, and then trade them in after the warranty expires for another.... and then your typical buyer comes along and sees a perceived great deal, but emotional wants override the reality of their purchase, a mechanical marvel that is finicky, high maintenance, and temperamental.
Not dogging BMW, they are superbly engineered, but without money to maintain, you will find yourself in a pit fast.

No discussion of Panzerwagen engineering is complete without a pic of the (problematic) timing chain setup on the Audi S4 V8

Oh yeah, it's on the back side of the engine and requires complete engine removal to replace the chain guides that wear with boring regularity.

I’ve done this repair..... not worth it, but not the worst. You just do the clutch and exhaust and every other thing you ever wanted to do at the same time. The B5 turbos that came before had to have the whole front end removed to replace the timing belt every 70k miles.
