3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

So on a 2020 Offroad, it seems like some Philips H9s in Low give a pretty good performance for minimal fuss/expense? Do I have that right?

 

The OEM lights are not HIDs. But to swap to the OEM LEDs you need the adapter harness. There is a thread on here of someone who sells another one as well.

The Amazon one others have used is linked in post #2, but that one posted above looks nicer. Simply modding the bulb base is easy to do though and eliminates unnecessary wiring. Any extra wiring theoretically reduces performance, although by an unnoticeable amount in this case.

Correct. They will provide the best performance the OEM halogen lights are capable of.

 

These are still 19w, but claiming 130% output. Never heard it the brand (possibly same manufacturer as Nokya). Also says they're 3800k, but they appear to have a slight blue tinting.

Reading this forum it sounds like they *could* fit but a lot of people seem to buy aftermarket LED fogs instead.

 

Maybe they're scared because they know a thorough test and review from @crashnburn80 would literally make or break their sales numbers. We've already seen what his impact has had on Amazon.

An RX350 test would be cool just to see the difference, for even more fun that with some Osram Xenarc +200 bulbs.

Interesting find, definitely an off-brand, never heard of them. Even if it was a true +130 the gains would be somewhat squandered by coating the entire bulb in blue. Some brands like PIAA promote things like calling +xxx brighter in referring to comparative color temps rather than focus/output like reputable brands.

See the Toyota LED fogs linked at the top. They are the recommended budget buy fog, they outperform Morimoto and cost less while being OEM. Only real drawback is their 6000k+ color which isn't an ideal color temp for poor weather/fog use.

 

Got my h9s in the lows. Major difference. I did have to trim the metal keyway for it into my headlight housing. Something that should be mentioned.

 

It is tricky but possible to fit the Philips H9s in the 3rd Gen lows without trimming the outer metal tabs. It is about finding the right angle, they don't go in nearly as easily as the H11s.

On my 4Runner, I was able to get the passenger H9 in almost right away. The drivers side, I gave up after 10 minutes and trimmed the tab. Popped right in after.

 

I haven't tried on 4runner headlights. Sometimes trimming the tab can be worth it to just make it easier.

 

I figure I'll pick up another set and trim them before I need them. I have a habit of blowing bulbs when it's below freezing. I don't want to have to worry about finagling a bulb as my fingers go numb lol.


A bit off topic: were HIR1/9011 not popular? I see many companies have discontinued them, but still produce HIR2/9012.

 

I've noticed the same but haven't given it much thought. After some searching it looks like they were removed from UN regulation as an approved light source for new vehicles. Probably that combined with not a lot of vehicles used them likely made it an economic decision for some manufactures to stop producing the bulb. While the HIR2/9012 is significantly higher in output that other 55w halogen bulbs the 65w HIR1/9011 is only ~10% higher in output than a common 65w H9 and comparatively more expensive.

High hopes, but low expectations. I have no doubt they're better than stock, and do seem to best my Xtravision +100 as I had previously noted, but I don't see them besting your preferred halogen setup, but we will see. I just want to see some data against the other aftermarket options. I bought the OEM for the quality over aftermarket, but I'm curious how different they are. I love mine, so I suppose that's all that matters.

 

It will be interesting. I don't think they will beat the peak performance of the Philips H9s, but the Philips H9s also reduce in output by 25% by end of life as shown here. I do suspect they will beat that measurement, meaning somewhere during the halogen lifespan the LED will actually be higher in intensity than the halogen. I think a major advantage will be the high beam, as the halogen high beam isn't impressive and the aftermarket ones (at least by Morimoto) are even worse, whereas IIHS rates the OEM LED high beam as significantly better than the halogen counterpart. Now this is all educated speculation, it will be very interesting to see the data in a comparison.
