This ought to keep me busy for a while.... getting rid of frame rust, frame reinforcement and painting .

 

I just wanna take the leaf springs and my hunting shit off it and put it on 02. Trying to maintain two vehicles on a halved ass college budget is stupid.

 

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying - can you clarify what you mean by not being able to compare the two shock types?

From my understanding, if the Foxes have 10" of travel, what does it matter what the overall compressed length is? With 3.5" of rod showing, he'd still have 6.5" of rod in the body, wouldn't he? (and of course the requisite math with 8" travel shocks)

So, (as I understand it), the only difference between Fox & ADS is that with longer shocks, you'd want the lower mounts to be pointed down even more than we have them with the ADS (which they don't appear to be in the photo).

Sure thing. The way I read your post (there was no mention of where upper and lower mounts were actually located btw), you compared how you were able to get more shock travel than he appears to have.

There are of course some assumptions here. For one, we don't how high the top mounts are and whether the shock travel length is actually 10". We also can't really tell how far leaned back they are tho they do appear to be very vertical.

Assuming the top mounts are at maximum, meaning, the top of the shock is ~.005" (almost touching) the bottom of the bed and there is no body lift involved, for him to be able to get the 5.5" of up travel you got, his shock bodies either need to be as short or shorter than yours are, because we can see from the image posted that the lower shock mounts are not as low on the axle as yours (ours) are, nor do his foxes have welded rod ends.

My guess is, and it is just a guess, that those foxes are 28" long when extended and 18" long when fully compressed. If this is true, this means the shock body is ~3" longer that our ADS shocks.

Add to that, a welded rod end adds almost 1" of shiny shaft to work with which is not present on the foxes.

Does that make sense?

 

The actual shock body is around 1.5 inch longer on the 10 inch Fox as opposed to the 10 inch ADS.

I was originally going to go ADS until they said it would be over 8 weeks for the shocks.

Pointing the lower mounts down further is a non starter. Not going to happen. The upper mounts are as high as they can be without cutting the bed.

There are more things to consider than driving style with how much up travel is neccesary, starting with spring rate of the leafs.

 

At least it's easy to redo... From someone that's redone it.

Your spring rate isn't ever going to make up for lack of up travel.


Up travel is King if you like going even decently fast.

 

What are the other ones? I will be removing the LCAs to install TC cam tab gussets.

 

I'm not going to redo it... It's fine where it's at.

Tent is on, and the truck is loaded nearly to the point of a 1 week trip. Marked the axles with grease (the wiper will put a line when the shock travel stopped) Drove over some rolled curb at speed. Around 20 mph.

The grease shows me 1.75 up travel... my bumps are 2 inches away from the pad they hit.

It's good to go.

Spring rate will 100% make a difference.

Take 2 exact same trucks. with the exact same weight in the back EXCEPT have a lower spring rate on one truck.

The truck with the lower spring rate will 100% without doubt, every single time, use more up travel.

There is no "lack of travel" being discussed here.

Since were on the topic what the word on removing a few leafs from a progressive leaf pack like J59s? Anybody ever done that?
