I can hear you talk about this stuff all day. It’s so fascinating. I always thought Allen Bradley was very good shit.

It’s really amazing what you can decipher from a simple picture of a random electrical fixture.

The government stuff is always more expensive. To explain in a context I know, I collect emergency vehicle equipment. Like sirens, lightbars, etc.

I noticed the police spec’d bars are WAY more than the ambulance, fire, or even the utility truck versions. Ambulance and fire are commonly ran by private companies or individuals. The police departments are always government funded.

Out of curiosity I looked up what the lightbars on the cop cars at my university cost. It’s about $6,500 from Federal Signal. While the identical utility truck version (think PG&E or Comcast) cost only $1,500.

Keep those pictures coming! This is fun and I love doing it

I don't know if you were apart of the conversation blue92 and I were having a while ago... but I build industrial control panels for a living. Both OEM applications and custom one offs. One of my duties when it comes to procuring new OEM customers is being able to decipher what a panel roughly does from a picture or description of process so we can quote parts from our vendors and get them all their control needs at a better price.. even more better if we can convince them to have us build it as well and save them that labor so they can focus on building the rest of their machine or process.

Allen Bradley has a team of their own lobbyists to convince big contracts to use their product... they don't have 'bad' stuff it's just way too expensive compared to pretty much anyone else out there.

That is crazy ridiculous about the light bar stuff I can't believe how expensive the police ones are! I love seeing your pictures of your collection, it's a cool eccentric thing to collect :D

That’s awesome! I might have to go back again tomorrow. I didn’t get to fully grasp everything they had.

I bought that big ‘ol enclosure because I’m building my own control system, but to power my lightbar collection. It’s just a few banks of switches that control the various aspects of the functions on the bars. I’ve got to refine my schematic, but that’s the gyst of it. (Gotta fuse everything, add some indicator lights, also I’m pretty sure the volt meter is in a dead short)

Bought some cool GE meters for it.

What did you go to college for? I’m having an existential crisis on if I should continue with my career path but this kind of thing has always fascinated me.

@BartMaster1234 Yea you're going to want to take that volt meter to your DC ground instead of inline with the +

You need 100amps of 12VDC? I'm assuming so that way you could technically turn every single light on at once? If that is the case you can get away with using smaller protection if you were to split up your banks and have each one fed with it's own power supply. That way you could have your 100amp service come in and get it diverted between 4 different power supplys that are rated for 25 amps a piece (that's not a common size... usual power supply's come in 5A, 10A, 20A, 30A and 40A)
Plus if you have an issue with just one bank it'll only trip the protection for that bank instead of shutting the whole system down.

Im a college dropout... I went to community college for a specialized combo of electrical and mechanical engineering, it's now a program called "mechatronics" but it wasn't called that yet when I started, they were just trying to phase that term into existence. But I prefer to work with my hands and I was worried I'd be stuck at a desk all day if I got a full on degree and quit to find work in the trades. I've been an industrial parts and service guy for heavy construction equipment as well as parts and service for lawn and garden stuff. Was a CNC machinist for awhile as well as a fabricator for a company that made hydraulic power packs and concrete cutting equipment. Every job I've ever had I've always ended up being their impromptu electrical guy so it's nice doing that full time now... been at my company for 3yrs now and I wouldn't change it for the world... even though I could get paid more elsewhere for less work.

That was a very informative Tedx talk, what are you going to college for?

@BartMaster1234 if you do go back tomorrow see if they've got any Eaton power supply's to look at... those would be your best bang for the buck

Only did it cause it's happening; he's just an extreme square.

Insists that he must smog it before handing it over to me vs me getting it smogged the same day if I had it in my possession.

These lightbars are thirsty beasts. And I mean thirsty. The old 1980’s and 1990’s Halogen ones with rotator motors draw 30-40 amps each in full code. So technically I couldn’t even run all of them in full code, maybe only one or two features per lightbar even with 100 amp service.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble finding high amperage dC power supplies. Even in that warehouse they only had low amp stuff, mainly 5v 80a or 12v <20a supplies. The supply I am using is used for charging RV batteries as an onboard ac/dc system.

I love working with my hands too, that’s why I’m kinda reconsidering my career path here. I’m going to school for computer engineering but I’m seriously considering switch to IT/business because I am god damn terrible at math and physics and that’s all engineering is.

Do elaborate on this trade school program though. My plan is to maybe get a technical grade degree after college. I really like this kind of stuff, figured I’d have a knack for it.

Total squaresville... tell him to live dangerously :burp:

And with those 4r links... do you really need to pay that much more for what looks like cromoly being the only difference? Those DOM ones are already going to be such a stout improvement I'm sure something else would break first.
