Need advice! 2019 Tacoma - keep it or return it....

You’ve admitted that the lease was a mistake and now your saying you want to turn around and buy something else brand new a couple years from now.

Why not save up the buyout amount over the next couple of years. Sounds like your going to spend the $30k if not more on another vehicle. If you enjoy the truck then keep it, stop spending money on mods and bank it. Then you don’t have to worry about used car rates.

Car payments are probably one of the worst financial mistakes someone can make. If your “financially strong” save up the cash write the check and move on.

 

How is that trolling? When I read this post it sounded like you were saying you like it despite an underpowered engine. Not everyone on this site is 10 years old you know.

Read through the post and it sounds like you enjoy your truck and have had nice experiences with it.
When I was 5 or 6 my dad had a truck; it was the Nissan pickup that came out before the “hardbody” style. He only had it for a year or two but I never forgot it and I always always wanted a truck since then. Guess you never know what your kids will remember.

Anyways, I also leased my taco (yes I’ve heard the same old “waste of money” speeches a hundred times as well), but will definitely keep it after the lease. I would suggest the same to you, if your situation at that time allows.
The question I ask myself, will I be able to find a 3 year old used Tacoma with 30,000 miles that has been treated as well as mine for the same price?
In your case the negative equity changes the calculation a bit tho as it is another variable that I didn’t have to account for.
If you are looking at a 4Runner; those are nice, but at least go on a test drive or rent one for a day or two. I drove a 2018 rental for a day, and found the brake pedal too mushy for my preference.
As for the new RAV4 my mom has one, and I do like the aesthetic, And makes for a decent family car but I hate the lane assist sooo sooo much. Also it’s utility could overlap with your Subaru.

Keep your taco and get it ceramic coated so it looks clean and shiny 90% of the time, and when it doesn’t, just power wash it for a couple of minutes.

I’m starting to think this was a troll post to begin with to get attention. Trying to find an echo chamber to feel better about his poor decisions. Just an observation...

Seems you’re more the emotional type who makes decisions on how they feel versus practicality. Not saying that good or bad, just saying thats what got you into this mess.

You would never go to your local car rental place, rent a car for a week and then accessorize it. In the same vein, you leased a truck, with negative equity going in because you “wanted” something you couldn’t really afford but then found a way to make it work within your budget. Your happiness, because it was finally in your possession propelled you to spend even more money in accessories. You’re now looking back at your poor financial decision, possibly feeling taken by a dealer who made a lease sound like roses and then you wasted more money on accessories because you know they’ll sit in your garage after you get rid of the truck.

I don’t say this to be mean, you’re just experiencing life and finances. I’ve done it and I’ve watched friend’s do it. We all want and then sooner or later the money catches up to you. The solution is to suck it up. At the end of the lease, return it, sell the accessories and then go BUY a truly affordable vehicle and stick with it for full term to create positive equity.

BTW, hello from a guy just down 100 from you. I was through your town just yesterday and had to wait out that damn train that decided to go forward 10 minutes and then backwards. Lol

FWIW, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. NEVER lease a vehicle that you cannot afford to buy on the same day you sign the lease. Leasing is for 2 types of people. The first is the suckers, the dealers prey on you because they know most people look at a monthly budget and if they can make it work, regardless of the behind the scene numbers, they get you out the door with a set of keys, which is a majority of lessees. The minority are the people who can afford to throw $X out the window but don’t mind it because they get a shiny new toy every term. And no! It’s not for businesses. Smart businesses buy the vehicle through a sub company and then lease it to themselves at their other company.

 

If posting my observation is trolling, sign me up!!

 

My other choice is to wait until lease is over and get brand new 4Runner.

Please let me know your thoughts – I am honestly very curious what is your take on that and what should I do?


If you are leasing because you can't afford to buy do not buy a new 4 Runner. The Tacoma is too big for many garages, something most here just can't understand.

Ditch the truck

 

Take all your accessories that you bought off of that truck and turn it in at the end of the lease period...If you refinance the remainder, in your case you will be refinancing negative equity that you had when trading in the first place. Let the truck your in now wash that negative equity away...then...start shopping for a new or nearly new tacoma and buy it without the negative equity, you will be surprised how close you can get to that 30K with a new one if you are persistent and negotiate. You said looks play more into your truck decision than function (off road/hauling etc) You can always dress up a lower trim and make it pretty or even go with a 2wd and dress it up to look pretty. Don't refinance that truck...

 

All I have to say, and I will do it last time - read the whole thread before wasting your time on posts that I wont even read.

I am looking for constructive criticism and honest advice not another post from guys who live in the mother basement, loading 10000 posts a day, trying to say their little winnies are longer than others... And yes I live in a box after 70” TV under the bridge - now please can we get over that part.... I cant afford food BUT local church feeds me...

 

You don’t think the negative equity was paid during the lease? I would expect at least some, if not all was. I know nothing about about leases, so I could be very wrong.

No, the $4k will stay with it and transfer to the purchase if I decide to buy it off. If I turn it down and dealer decides to sell it, they would sell it off at lower price than my buyout, However, with demands craziness that is running now, they would probably list it at $35k and easily sell it - considering that my truck will look like brand new.

Hahahha - that train gives me headache multiple times a day!!!
I leased the truck to try it out, and I could easily bought it but was not sure if I like it. I have never owned truck in my life and listened to buddy of mine who insisted that I will love it!
He was right - I have fallen in love with it....hence the decision being difficult. Now which side of the brain is going to win - rational (finances, negative equity, car losing its value, car very bad investment) or empirical (against logic, along with feelings, connection, sentiment etc)

 

Sounds like an easy way to dump some debt, never would have thunk it.
