Is the 4.9 I6 more reliable then 2.7 I4 toyota? Do you pick older f150 4.9 over your 2nd gen Tacoma 4 cylinder?

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that all of the Toyotas and most of the Hondas ever made are way more reliable than any of the Ford, GM, or Chrysler vehicles built in the last 40 years.

    They both are good engines.
    “Over built” and under powered.
My opinion is that the Toyota is the better engine.
I’ve seen many, many 2.4, 2.7 with well over 300k. Some with 400k.
I’ve seen the 4.9 with close to 200k, but they were using oil consistently.

The Ford 2.9 on the other hand.
Well mine in my Bronco II cracked the head.
    The head itself cracked.

Nahh, OP seems to want to tow.
I wouldn’t recommend either engine for towing.
Get the Tundra 5.7 or Ford 5.0.

Those are the better choices for towing.

Both engines are known to be very reliable.

The biggest problem with Ford 4.9 is at this point they are starting to get pretty old and the trucks may need some maintenance.

Do you need the capability of a full size? Are you okay with lower gas mileage?

It depends on the trailer and all the other stuff you will be hauling.
I can’t remember off hand, but I think towing capacity is 3,500 lbs.
The closer you get to the 3,500 lbs the less you or the truck are going to enjoy the experience.

Your truck is rated for 3500 lbs. How much will the trailer weigh? I see no reason to switch

There's something that can be said about an old all iron pushrod engine you can get with a standard behind that has all the torque

There's no comparing the 2.7 to the 4.9

Both are reliable, but everythings cheaper and easier on the Ford but it will drink gas

The 2.7 and rest of the truck won't like but will definantly do it

If you buy a truck old enough to have a 4.9 expect to put 1k in parts into it to have it operate as seamlessly as your Tacoma currently does

Get the rzr and trailer first. Try it out with your Tacoma. Then decide if you want to trade your truck. No need to make both changes at the same time

I own a 2019 RZR turbo and have a 2.7 5 speed. I’ve towed the RZR around town. Doesn’t feel too bad until you hitting hills. I’d recommend V6, but a 2.7 can definitely handle the weight.

Don't sell the Ford 4.9 short. It was designed for HEAVY duty applications such as dump trucks, school buses, and was the standard engine for years in Ford 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. UPS used to use that engine in their delivery vans. They pulled them every 300,000 miles and had them rebuilt whether they needed it or not. They kept new and rebuilt engines in stock and could do the swap overnight and put the vans back on the road the next day.

The Ford 5.0 is a car engine designed for a Mustang. The 4.9 gets its torque at 1600-2000 rpm depending on the year of manufacture. The 5.0 at 3500-4500 rpm depending on year of manufacture. The old 4.9 isn't fast, but it will out pull the 5.0 if it is geared right. The 2.7 doesn't come close. The Tundra 5.7 is a LOT better. Not necessarily because the engine is more powerful than Ford. But because Ford uses 3.31 and 3.55 axle ratios. Tundra is 4.30.

That said, the 4.9 engine hasn't been used in years, I'm thinking 1996 was the last year it was in F150's. There are better options today.

FWIW a turbo bolted on to the Ford 300 will make it scream. I also hang out on fordsix.com. There’s quite a cult following on the straight six albeit not as big a following as more popular engines that are still in production.

There is no reason to think the 2.7 cannot tow a 1700 lb load on a proper trailer. Hell For perspective: I remember towing a 15 Ft Bomber Bass Boat for years with a 20R inline 4 with the blistering 90 HP and 122 Lbs Ft of torque at 2400 RPM.

It wasn't fast but I kept up with traffic and never any issues. The 2TR-FE is used in small busses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Coaster

Don’t know about the reliability of the Ford 4.9l, but I’m assuming your 2009 Tacoma 4 cylinder is paid for? You already have the 5 speed. Yes, regearing will help with your towing, especially if you have over-sized tires.

I’ve got a 1998 Toyota T-100 with the earlier 2.7l to the one you and I have in our trucks. It currently sits with over 720,000 miles on it. One of the injectors locked open at around 705,000 miles, and we had the engine rebuilt. Literally ZERO issues before that. None. It was incredible. My 2007 Tacoma 2.7l 5 speed has 285,000 miles on it and is my daily driver. And it tows.
