We raised two boys in a 2001 DCSB back in the day, and once they got older we made it work, lot's of memories in that old truck,
my 2016 actually has better back seats, and a little more room. Not ideal but you can!

 

Definitely worthy of the title, I would hate to see the street after that, bet he left a nice sized pothole.

 

What about a Toyota Highlander? Seems like the best option, 4runners are meant more for offroading aren't they?

imo, an SUV is better suited for a family. The few times you need a truck you could go rent one. Any of the mid size puckups are limited in back seat room. That said, you need to go look at SUV and the Tacoma. Check out the room and decide for yourself.

My daily driver is a Mercedes C350e and it doesn’t have a spare tire either. Just run flats, that wear really quickly and are expensive.

on the other note: A Tacoma as a family hauler might work, if you have a tonneau cover, for longer trips.

 

Well im a truck guy but from the sounds of it you dont get your hands dirty, get a 4runner that thing will outlive you, been hearing some shotty work on the 3rd gen drivetrains

 

Go test drive and see if it’s right for your family. My wife drives a Highlander and I drive a Tacoma. We’ve taken both on trips and we make both work. Our kids are also still in car seats. When we take my truck, we store most of our stuff in the bed with tonneau cover and keep some toys in the back for them. Not sure how it will work once they get older, but I’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

 

I had a issue in my truck for road trips with the kids toys and stuff. The solution for me was to get the meso overhead rack, Each kid gets a bag overhead that they can keep snacks and small toys in. Everything else they have to either put in the middle seat or on the floor.

 

Oh its not so bad at over 6' haha. The kids would be the deal breaker for me.

i had a Corolla and traded it in for the taco, I use the Tacoma as a daily.
im a family of three. Im 5’7, the wife is 5’4 and with the baby seat in the back there’s plenty of room. I just drove 350 miles and it’s as comfortable as my corolla just a taller and a bit bigger. My wife and baby love it and that’s all I care about.
I’ve also used the bed as soon as I got the truck. I put put my r6 in the bed and then used it transport furniture for my apartment. It’s convenient. Wouldn’t have been able to do that with my corolla.

 

I think that’s how humans invented fire. At least it’s the moment the Mopar guys first heard about it.

 

I’ve got 2 boys, 5 and 3 and a 50lb dog, we run 2018 Odyssey (10 spd auto, adaptive cruise, keep-in-lane, blind spot monitor, all the safety goodies) and I just swapped my way-too-low-mileage 2013 prius to my sis once I found my 2016 taco. The truck is a fun toy but not much of a family vehicle, most trucks aren't, outside of maybe towing a boat/rv to somewhere fun.

I do love the visual of Joe Dad attempting to change to his spare tire on a minivan with his wife and kids looking on with growing frustration in the hot/cold by the side of a road somewhere. You'd have to be really good or really stupid to try that more than once.

 

I've been blasted on other threads about promoting the new (2019-2020) Rav4's, but we've got one & ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, we also have a 1st gen Taco, which is why I'm here. The hybrid Rav4 is AWD, has all the up-to-date technology, is fast & super spacious. It's definitely an avenue to explore for a growing family vs a more expensive 4Runner. Just my .02

 

I think the RAV4, Highlander, and Sequoia are all their own class of vehicles, just different sizes within it. The 4Runner is a completely different beast that is more aligned with the Tacoma and Tundra, just the SUV (Real SUV) version of them. I personally have owned 3 4Runners, absolutely love them.

but since the op isn’t asking for vehicles that cost more than double or triple what he is looking at now, how about a Honda HRV? While not as good as the CRV it’s similar class and size, and a whole lot cheaper.
