Transmission acting weird during down hill coasting......

I noticed today for the second time while going down hill on the same hill that the transmission held to the gear and did not want to shift to the next gear. First at the beginning of the hill I pressed the brake to slow down a bit and the truck down shifted, after the down shift I coasted and the truck held the same gear, then, I gave it gas but still the RPM's climbed but the transmission did not change gear, seemed like the truck wanted to stay in the current gear.

When I drive on normally (not on a long steep hill) the transmission always shift fine. I don't know if this is normal operation for a transmission on a truck, to hold the gear to help braking while going down hill.

 

Its down hill assist. Its so you don't continually accelerate.

 

I thought that the down hill assist was in 4wd, I was driving on-road.

 

I'm not to sure, since I have 08

 

My 2010 V-6 does the same thing when I go down a hill, if I tap the brake lightly it will downshift........For what its worth it bugs the crap out of me,,,But I still get 19 to 20 mpg every tank

Does the same on my '09. Pretty sure it's "normal" but I can't remember offhand what Toyota calls it.

If I'm going down a long hill riding the brakes, my transmission downshifts and rides a lower gear down the hill. Saves you from riding the brakes.

 

I've felt this same thing in my 05. It feels like it's a lazy 4-5 up shift goin down hill.

 

Mine does it too, and the wifes Sienna does too. A Toyota thing i guess. It freaked me out the first time it happened.

 

Now that I think of it, my mom's 03 Honda odyssey did that same thing. When ever I was going down hill and applied the brakes it would down shift, but it also made the brakes feel "weak", like the pedal would give out some.

 

yup, engine breaking. No, not just 4x4. Wouldn't do a lot of good to just have it then, would it? I mean, who carries a 3-ton trailer downhill in the mud?

 

That kinda sounds like fun.
