In terms of tracking down where the leak is coming from (if its not the overflow which I suspect) you'd would have to wash the whole engine bay down, let it dry, and then monitor for leaks. Preferably without driving around, but it may not get hot enough just idling unfortunately

suck some air near the tail pipe, so I assume the gasket isn’t blown.

Probably will start with a cap, then do the water pump, fan clutch and thermostat when I get some time

Barrow a coolant leak tester from autozone or similar. Pump up the system and see if the pressure goes down and look for leaks. If it doesn't then sound like the previous post about cap and recovery system. Just a thought. :notsure:

No, it goes in place of radiator cap. It has a pump and guage on it to pressurize coolant system. You pump it up and look for leaks and see if pressure drops. Similar to this

It tests the cooling system as a whole by pressuring it. If you have a leak, you will see an out-of-spec pressure drop on the gauge and either a drip/weep/leak outside the block, or nothing. If you have a pressure drop and no visible drips, then you need to chase inside the block using a leakdown tester and stethoscope.

Did you have Toyota check it over? Nothing wrong with Autozone. Many of their items have lifetime warranty.

Yeah Toyota went over. Water pump and thermostat. They want 1200+ for that so I’ll be doing it in the driveway

Get oem. Have had bad headgaskets 3 times. Get one of those funnels that lets you fill it up and check for air coming out of the radiator fill hole.
System is sucking air in from somewhere and not lwtting the cooland circulate and makes it throw it back up.

Thermostat would make it overheat at idle. Replace waterpump and fan clutch from Rockauto. They sell the Aisin pump. Get thermostat from dealer.

Looks like the head gasket. Watch your coolant reservoir for bubbles. It looks like it might have overflow and hit the fan. Get a scan gauge and always watch your temps. If it’s not misfiring yet just monitor and save your money for the head gasket or swap.

Did the test kit and took it to Toyota, they wanted me get new water pump and thermostat. Tech also said a fan clutch wouldn’t hurt either. So doing those 3 things when I get some extra $

If you are trying to save money. Use a scan gauge and monitor your temps. You’ll be able to tell if the thermostat is opening or closed. But I would be very weary your vehicle is an 06. They had issues with the head gasket leaking on the o5- and part of the year for the 06 before the head gasket was revised.

my last taco was an 05 and I went through this whole mess with it. My car would push coolant out of the radiator slowly. The only time it would over heat was on long trips or if I was in the mountains and pushing the engine. I would just keep popping the cap every few days top off the coolant on the radiator and watch the overflow tank.

I changed pretty much everything, short of the engine trying to figure this out. And I used the block test and got a blue/green result.

I recently had the same issue too. One of my pulleys was screaming and I think the radiator cap failed and was not keeping the cooling system pressurized which allowed the coolant to boilover at a lower temperature. I have a scangauge and the highest temp was 220F. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, fan clutch, hoses, pulleys, tensioner, belt, drain and refill the coolant, and radiator cap. It took me all day on Friday. 10 hours total. Rockauto had the best prices, use the forum 5% discount code. Norwalk Toyota had the best price on the 50/50 pink coolant, ask for the online price. I'm at 326k, so I'm hoping this is the last time I do this as I make the push to 500k. The tensioner is a PITA.

I still need to get the engine bay cleaned, I just did a simple wipe down.

If you need a fan clutch, I have an extra Aisin one. Somehow I purchased two of them. I'll let it go for 90% of Rockautos price if you need it.
