Why no rear fog lamp on vehicles in USA when everyone loves front fogs?

Within reason, chase lights are absolutely helpful. In the right conditions out west, dust will linger on trails for quite some time. I was eating dust from my buddy a few weeks ago that was half a mile ahead of me. If he stopped on the trail without me knowing, we'd both be done for cuz vis was near zero

That's a whole different ball game. You guys know what you need out there.

I'd agree out there with that much dirt kicking up extra lighting wouldnt hurt.

But I love all these low lit vehicle pictures making it seem like vehicles can't be seen in fog at all when really it's more like

    fog0110.jpg

We have a bunch of wanna be euro tuners around here. And some legit ones. Almost all of them look like poorly wired brake lights signaling a braking action.

I'd be pissed coming around a corner at a reasonable speed during the winter time in a storm and have a slower vehicle with a light like that making it seem like he's got his brakes on in an area where folks shouldn't be braking.

Between Nor' Easters and the fogs in the valleys from mountains and swaps, I've never had a close call due to poor lighting. Especially in modern cars.

My vacation from TW was clearly not long enough...

Uh no, they are there to supplement the low beams and illuminate the area directly in front of you so you can see the road and what’s to the sides.

Cause brake lights and over driving the conditions isn’t enough...where does it end?

I agree that driving behind someone with a rear for when it is not needed is most annoying... In the EU, if you have the rear fog light on in clear conditions, you will get a ticket immediately.
In the USA, I doubt most cops know what a rear fog light is, or notice when it is being used incorrectly...

But I agree that most vehicle's rear lights are fine for most conditions... But it is nice to have it available for those rare times...

Partially true, the fronts are positioned low so they do not create glare off of The fog. The rear are bright so people can see you from a distance.

This is going to be a real hard sell on everyone who lives in a snow state and drives through blizzards and white outs on a yearly basis.

Fog isn't even on the radar of what I would consider to be dangerous or risky driving conditions

In hard snow do you not use your fog lights? I do...

So your defense for having a rear " viability light" is that you use front fog lights for navigating?

This is looking for a solution on a problem no one has. If you can't see the lights on a car while driving you either need to have your eyes checked, or you need to slow down.

Obviously you’re taking this personally, I apologise if I’ve upset you.

The rear fog lamp is for other people to see you when weather is extreme, it’s really that simple. In extreme conditions where visibility is bad you have an extra bright light to help other road users see the back of your vehicle...

I'm aware. We see hipsters with money retrofit their S7 and other euro cars with them here and there. We also know a thing or two about extreme weather in the North east.

Upset me? Nah. I just think it's funny / dumb. With all the engineers in the world and all the ways car companies love to toss electronics in our vehicles to mark up the price, there's a reason why they're not over here. Just not needed.

I was about to comment how ridiculous I think rear fog lights are, but then realized I have bed stiffeners and a lot of people think those are ridiculous so... to each their own I guess

I've got bed stiffeners as well. I really don't see a problem with them. Even if it's just snake oil and is really doing nothing for the bed I do have to say the version I have (TC) offer a ton of utility and works perfect for what I like to do. I use them to hold up my Softopper rear portion and when I'm not using that, I use one of the mounting holes on it for my whip flag antenna at the sand dunes so to me it's plenty worth it.

Funny how this is a scientifically proven safety feature used in other counties for real poor weather conditions but given so much hate here. The concept works, unfortunately too many people drive with their fogs on when they shouldn't, thinking it helps them see better when it doesn't, and that also will cause the rear fog to annoy the trailing driver. The tool and concept is effective and works, it is the operator that doesn't understand how to use them.

So I ask this as a legit question, because I know your vast knowledge of lighting and respect it.

If it's so well documented from other countries that have done the legwork and been proven effective, why hasn't the US adopted it and mandated it?

Just to be clear, not being snarky, legit question for you.
