two screw holes in front bed

noticed there were two small screw cut outs on the front bed (where rail would be.. wonder why they got rid of it on the 16?)... what is that for?

 

I believe they are on the otherside its some of what connects the bedliner to the bed. I got a head rail off ebay for $30 and the torx bolts are right there in the bed popped it right in.

Mine came with the factory tonneau. It has a block mounted there to locate the front of the cover.

Light for what? I personally don't like that spot, as it protrudes out. It'd get crushed pretty easy.

Factory option is what I'd go with.

I did this, added a SS hook and SS hardware, locktited the socket head cap screws in place, used some washers to space the hook from the rail. Super light duty, maybe bed net, tieing up the mtn bike, etc...

 

What size screws did you put in there. I have a whole workshop and can’t find any.

do those holes screw into metal? I am trying to find a place to mount a small winch in the front of the bed to load my big kayak. I mounted the winch to the bed rail system then realized that is just hard plastic not metal before I used the winch. Has anyone utilized a bed mounted winch and how did you mount it??

It's for a block thing that prevents the tri-fold tonneau from collapsing in the middle, when there's a lot of weight on it. It's not very useful TBH. You can use the holes for whatever.

 

That rail is mounted to the same place as the track rails are. So it is no stronger than the normal track rails. I would actually say not to use those holes for your kayak winch, the winch will be mounted higher up than the bolts that hold the rail on. This will put more force on the mounting bolts that hold it to the bed (just like using a breaker bar to loosen bolts) Putting it on the track rail will make your winch mounts at the same location as the bolts that hold the rail to the bed.

If it were me, I would put the winch on the track rail (if you have the front one) Then you would be able to move it to either side if needed, and it wouldnt stick up above the bed.

 

do you think that bed rail is strong enough to hold the winch pulling up the kayak. I had it mounted there with a bracket and when I realized it was just hard plastic that kind of flexes a little bit, I thought maybe it would rip right out pulling up the kayak? if not, maybe I will screw it back in and try it...

 

I would think so, its designed to tie loads to. So as long as your kayak is not super heavy it should work. Those rails are rated around 200lbs. It will link the front rail to the side rails and beef them up a ton. The version I linked to is for the 05-15 models that came with the header rails, I believe it will fit 16+ models as long as you have the header rail installed. Otherwise they do sell a 16+ version for trucks without the front track rail.
