    Hey all,

My fiancé is allergic to bees, and needs to carry an epipen. Up to this point we didn’t bring one because she hadn’t been stung in so long she wasn’t worried about it. Well she was stung yesterday (all is well now, she is all good) but reinforced the requirement to bring one with us wheeling and camping.

EpiPens are new to me, I’ve never needed one, and was surprised to learn the temperature requirements. They’re to be stored between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Being in SoCal and desert trips, the temperature regularly exceeds these limits.
I’ve done some research, but don’t really see a great method to keep these safely in that temperature range.
Are the provided insulated bags “good enough” or do they really work well enough to keep an epipen at the correct temperature? Or is there something else you’ve used, seen, or heard about that works better?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we want to be properly prepared.

    Thanks!

Side note: clinical trials of the sublingual pill form epinephrine needs to get a move on. That would be so much better for outdoor activities!

A small insulated lunchbox or something similar, inside of a backpack or something out of direct sunlight should stay at a stable temp for quite a while. That’s what I would try!

Great idea, and I’ve been checking, but most are designed for insulin at a lower temperature. It’s surprisingly difficult to find something to cool to “room temp”.

More than likely what we’ll need to do! Double up on the insulation to try and keep the heat (or cold) out. Thanks!

I would try a vacuum insulated drink bottle. If you store it at 68 or so for a while before you leave, it'll take some time for the inside to get up past 77.
Especially if you pack the empty space with something with a lot of thermal mass, like water or brick.

    Canada eh? Nah. Too cold!

That’s a great idea as well. I just want to add a small digital thermometer into it to watch the temp.

This looks like a great solution. Thanks for the link!

 No, you need a Ridgeline!

image.jpg My daughter needs to carry one for tree-nut allergies, we got her an LLBean pencil case, put that in a ziplock, and keep it in the cooler with our food. It seems to work fine, the cooler never gets very cold as we just add a little ice from the yeti-type drink cooler at a time.

Good to know. A combination of an insulated pouch or insulated cup and toss it in the cooler could also be a great solution. Thanks!

Dude this is genius. Wrap the epipen in ziplock bags and then fill it with room temp water.

    Good thinking.

anyone know the price of an epipen these days. Lat one I purchased a few years ago was getting pricey. I hear that there really expensive today. I need to carry one, but don't know if I can afford one now.

CVS (a pharmacy chain out here, not sure if they are out there) carries a generic version of the EpiPen thats about $100 for 2. The brand name EpiPen is almost $700 for 2, so it's a much better deal.

The straight retail price, I’m not sure. Prior to meeting deductible the hospital pharmacy was charging $157 for one.
After deductible CVS pharmacy is $16 for two.
    (Both Mylar EpiPen brand).

Also for what it’s worth: trying the 6qt variable temperature fridge. Have that strapped down and plugged in to the cargo area in my fiancé’s 4runner. It’s been doing well so far, need to check it after sitting to see what the ambient temp becomes, but when on it reaches 70 degrees without issue.

this is a good idea. Even a well insulated thermos with a cool pack in it or something. My wife has a Coleman brand one and that thing will keep a drink cold even if you leave it in a hot car for a few hours.

Thanks for the reply, I'll get my dr. to call me in one to CVS and get the generic one. I'd heard that the company that was making the name brand, had increased their prices through the roof. greedy fucking people. Big Pharma is ripping people off.

yeah after that happened I think there was a rush to get cheaper options available, luckily now it seems like there are some. There's no way the average person could afford to constantly be buying the brand name ones at the cost they are now.
