So we just sold our sea food sportster boy over the weekend and will be buying a bigger 12 person, 19 foot, 3500lb boat next spring. My taco towed the sportster fine which weighed 1500 but I’m worried the bigger boat will be too much for it as it already hangs in 4th gear while towing. Anyone have experience with this? Best mods to do to support it? (Re-gear, supercharger, leaf packs, etc...). Thanks in advance for the advice!

My boat is 3300 and my camper is 4000. My stock TRDOR tows both ok. The camper with its larger profile is more work for it. You say it hangs in 4th so I’m assuming you have the automatic trans. which is geared higher than my manual. Even so if you have the towing package it should be rated for over 6000. Also if I recall correctly it’s not recommend to use 5th or 6th while towing and generally recommended to use the ECT PWR setting.

I’m thinking I may re-gear, add icon leaf pack, and am already tuned in 91 octane tune with OV. I almost upgraded to a 2500 Cummins today but decided dropping $32k cash right after paying mine off wasn’t the best choice with the whole pandemic and everything . Plus I actually like driving my Taco more then the Ram I test drove. Anyone towed with a supercharger on these?

I have a 2019 Limited and it tows my Chapparral 19 foot H2O just fine. Just push the ECT button, put it in S mode and if you are on flat ground, you can use 5th gear. If you get to a hill, downshift to 4th. Easy Peasy. My wife even tows the boat on long trips when we take our motorhome, so we have the truck there as a spare vehicle.

I’d buy the Cummins and never look back.

May not be happy doing it, but it’ll tow it.

    Lol 6.7 paired with a 68rfe is a much better set up than a 5.9 and a 48re. I’ve had a few of both.

Considering the first orders for the first available supercharger just happened I’d say probably not

You have two overdrive gears so it is proper that you operate in 4th gear.

You're not supposed to be running in OD when towing anyway. Put the truck in 4th gear while the trailer is hitched to the truck. It's in the owners manual.

In fact it works better in 4th gear in a lot of other situations. If I'm driving in town where speeds will never get over 45 I take it out of OD. Same when driving in mountains. The truck is a lot happier when it doesn't have to keep hunting back and forth between OD and 4th gear. Gets better fuel mileage too.

Do that and you won't have any issues with 3500 lbs. No need to modify the truck, just drive it the way it was designed.

I had the automatic and now a manual, if the automatic came with the 4.30 gears like the manual you would have a perfect truck. Regear for sure as to buying a new truck

Sounds like gears and leaf pack are the way to go! 4.30 or 5.10’s?

If you're leaving your truck stock and not planning on getting a bigger rv, 4.30 gears would be perfect. Sometimes guys sell them on here.
